Non-traditional students may bemoan the fact that they don’t have access to the same scholarships as more traditional college students. While it is true there are more scholarship options for recent high school graduates, some of the best scholarships for non-traditional students are easy to find. There are grants and scholarships that help these students cover a portion of tuition or related expenses. Some cover the entirety of education. The following are only a few of the best scholarships for non-traditional students.

1. Pride Foundation Scholarships
Eligibility
– Identify as LGBTQ+ or an ally
– Reside in Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon or Washington
– Demonstrate financial need
– Must be pursuing post-secondary education
The Pride Foundation offers more than 60 scholarships to students who show themselves to be potential leaders in any chosen field of study. Students who face financial need and other obstacles are eligible for one of the many scholarships offered through the Pride Foundation. The scholarship program has awarded more than $5 million in post-secondary funding since its inception in 1993. Students can use the awarded scholarship money for tuition, books, room and board, study abroad programs or any other college-related expenses. Pride Foundation scholarships are awarded directly to the school and can only be used at accredited institutions.
2. Chief Simon Kahquados Scholarship
Eligibility
– Wisconsin resident
– US citizen
– Returning or continuing student at Wisconsin educational institute with at least one year of coursework
– Minimum 2.25 GPA
This $5,000 award is offered by the Forest County Potawatomi, Keeper of the Fire. The Chief Simon Kahquados Scholarship is one of three offered by the foundation, but it is the only scholarship that is made available to non-traditional students. Multiple awards may be offered each year, though it is a one-time scholarship that is not renewable. Students do not need to be members of the Potawatomi or other Native American tribes in order to apply.
3. Ellen M. Cherry-Delawder Memorial Scholarship

– Student must attend Howard Community College
– Single parent with dependent child(ren)

Howard Community College is located in Columbia, Howard County, Maryland. The school has over 100 programs in Arts and Humanities, Business, Culinary Arts, Teacher Education, and many other areas. The Ellen M. Cherry-Delawder Memorial Scholarship is offered to non-traditional students who are single parents. The award amount varies. It is available to students who attend the Howard Community College home campus in Columbia or one of the school’s satellite campuses. Howard offers a number of other grants and scholarships for non-traditional students.
4. eQuality Scholarship Collaborative
Eligibility
– Resident of northern or central California
– Pursuing a nursing or graduate health degree in California, or
– Pursuing a graduate health degree at any accredited institution
eQuality is a foundation based in the San Francisco Bay area that provides scholarship awards to members of the LGBTQ+ community and allies. The foundation has awarded over 375 awards worth more than $1.4 million since its inception in 1989. eQuality awards about 20 scholarships per year. Nearly half of those are offered to non-traditional students. Students chosen for the scholarships should show proof of service to the LGBTQ+ community, leadership and excellence in academic achievement. Award amounts vary.
5. Hawaii Community Foundation Scholarships

The Hawaii Community Foundation offers access to grants and scholarships based on individual eligibility requirements. The foundation provides a portal to over 100 scholarships that are open to traditional and non-traditional students. Some scholarships require that students have ties to certain organizations or places of business, such as the ABC Stores Jumpstart Scholarship Fund. Some are for students with specific ancestry, such as the Dr. Julius Bajet Sorla Memorial Scholarship Fund, which is only available to Filipino students. Many require that students reside in the state of Hawaii, though there are others, like the 100th Infantry Battalion Veterans Memorial Scholarship Fund, that are open to students from around the country as long as they meet the remaining requirements. Students should consult the foundation’s scholarship search to learn about the specific awards and their requirements.
6. Early Childhood Educators Scholarship

– Currently pursuing a degree in early childhood education
In addition to the Early Childhood Educators Scholarship, the Community Foundation of Northern Illinois allows students to apply for all 80 of their scholarships with just one application. Many of these scholarships are open to both traditional and non-traditional students, though some have specific requirements that must be met. Even those students who do not meet eligibility requirements for all scholarships can benefit from completing the application as students will be considered for all that apply in their specific situation.
7. Ernest and Charlene Stachowiak Memorial Scholarship
Eligibility
– Current college or non-traditional student
– Hold permanent address in Winnebago or Boone County, Illinois
– Hold a GPA of at least 2.5
– Demonstrate financial need
In addition to the Ernest and Charlene Stachowiak Memorial Scholarship, the Community Foundation of Northern Illinois provides access to more than 80 scholarships. Students who apply for one of these scholarships may be considered for all for which they meet eligibility requirements.
8. John Lennon Scholarships
Eligibility
– Currently enrolled or graduated from a U.S. college or university
– Between age 17 to 24
– Submitted song cannot have attributed rights
The John Lennon Scholarships are for songwriters and composers. These scholarships can be used for education through any U.S. college or university. Unlike many scholarships, the John Lennon Scholarships can be earned after an individual has graduated, and then used to pay student loans or other debts accrued while enrolled. Students apply for these scholarships by submitting an original song in the genres of alternative, pop, indie, electronica, R&B and experimental. Three scholarships of up to $20,000 are awarded each year.
9. Oregon Barber and Hairdressers Grant Program
Eligibility
– Oregon resident
– Enrolled full-time in a hair design, barbering or cosmetology school
– Demonstrate financial need
The Oregon Barber and Hairdressers Grant Program was created to offer one-time awards to those individuals who can demonstrate extreme financial aid while attending a barber or hairdressing program. The amount of the award varies from year-to-year. This grant is one of the many offered by the Office of Student Access and Completion of the state of Oregon’s Higher Education Coordinating Commission. These grants are not offered to individuals who are currently in prison, currently in high school or are in default of any Title IV loans.
10. Mothers of Multiples Club Scholarships
Eligibility
– Multiple by birth (twin, triplet, etc.) or the mother of multiples

– Reside in Southern California or Clark County, Nevada

The Southern California Mothers of Multiples Clubs supports multiples and the mothers of those multiples. The scholarships range in amounts from $250 to $1,500. Multiples are allowed to apply together but they can also apply as individuals. These scholarships are awarded based on financial need, academic achievement, personal essays, letters of recommendation and extra-curricular activities. These scholarships are open to traditional and non-traditional students as long as they meet all other eligibility requirements.
11. Dr. Constance L. Goode Memorial Scholarship
Eligibility
– Must be African American
– Current high school senior or currently enrolled in college
– Pursuing an education degree
– GPA of at least 2.5
The Dr. Constance L. Goode Memorial scholarship is available to any African American student in Illinois who is planning to pursue a career in teaching. Unlike many scholarships, this award is not need-based. Instead, the awarding committee considers the applicant’s personal essay and their ability to create change in their community. The Community Foundation of Northern Illinois provides access to a large number of scholarships. Many are open to both traditional and non-traditional students. Though eligibility requirements vary for each scholarship, students can apply for them all with one application.
12. Ottawa University Alumni Impact Award

– Must be a first-time student at Ottawa University
– Must be referred by an Ottawa University alum
The Alumni Impact Award at Ottawa University is unique in that it is awarded by Ottawa University alumni. This $500 scholarship can be awarded to a new student at Ottawa University who is referred by the alum. The student can be either traditional or non-traditional, but they must not currently be enrolled at the university. Students may only receive one award, but alums can nominate multiple students to receive the $500 gift.
13. Mary Frann Carol Scholarship
Eligibility
– Resident of Sarasota County, Florida
– Must be out of high school for a minimum of three years
– Demonstrate financial need and academic ability
The Mary Frann Carol Scholarship is offered to non-traditional students who plan to attend a university or trade school. The scholarship amount of $3,000 can be used for tuition, books and other fees. It cannot be applied toward living expenses. The scholarship is renewable for those students who maintain a 3.2 GPA or higher. The Mary Frann Carol Scholarship is hosted by the Catholic Community Foundation of Southwest Florida via a gift to the foundation from Mary Frann Carroll’s estate.
14. Alzheimer’s Awareness College Scholarship Essay Contest
Eligibility
– High school senior
– Must have been affected by Alzheimer’s Disease in some way
– Complete a 1,200 to 1,500 word essay
The Alzheimer’s Awareness College Scholarship Essay Contest is open to high school seniors who intend to pursue college after graduation. Though these students may be considered “traditional,” they are “non-traditional” applicants in the sense that their lives must have been touched in some way by Alzheimer’s. Students write essays that are then judged and awarded amounts ranging from $500 to $5,000.
15. The College of Saint Rose Scholarships
Eligibility
– Excellence in academic achievement
– First-time freshman
– Attending the College of Saint Rose
The College of Saint Rose provides scholarships for students based on their academic achievements. First-year students can receive up to $22,000 per year if they demonstrate excellence in high school GPA and college entrance test scores. Students do not have to be recent high school graduates to qualify for these scholarships. Talent scholarships are also offered to students interested in studying art or music.
16. Minnesota Masonic Charities Signature Scholarships Program

– Minnesota high school graduate
– GPA of at least 3.9
– ACT of 29 or higher
– Enrolled in a four-year institution
The Minnesota Masonic Charities Program provides six signature awards per year. Each of these scholarships is worth $5,000 and are renewable for up to four years of college education. In addition to the signature scholarship, the Minnesota Masonic Charities offers scholarships for students based on academic achievement and to those who intend to attend a vocational or trade school.
17. Honors Program at New Jersey City University

New Jersey City University provides the honors program scholarship for students who demonstrate excellence in academic achievement. The honors program award pays for full tuition, covers the cost of study abroad opportunities and provides a laptop computer. The scholarship is renewable for up to eight semesters if students maintain academic excellence.
18. Roadway Worker Memorial Scholarship Program

– Child or spouse of a roadway worker who was killed or disabled due to a work-related accident

The Roadway Worker Memorial Scholarship offers awards of up to $10,000 to the dependents of roadway workers who have been injured or killed while working. Students may receive an additional $1,000 if they show a commitment to volunteerism. Scholarships can be used for tuition, room and board, books and any other fees related to education.
19. South Carolina Credit Union Scholarship Competition

– Must attend a university or trade school in South Carolina

The South Carolina Credit Union offers numerous scholarships as part of its essay competition each year. The range in value from $1,500 to $12,000. The amounts are determined by whether the student is attending a four-year university or a trade school and they are ranked first through third place with an additional award being given to those three applicants who earn honorable mentions. This scholarship competition is open to traditional and non-traditional students. Applicants may receive scholarships in multiple years but must complete a new essay each year.
20. College Counts Scholarship

The College Counts scholarship is offered by the state of Alabama for those students who wish to attend college but may not otherwise be eligible for scholarships. Eligible students will receive a $4,000 award if they are attending a four-year institution or a $2,000 award if they are attending a junior or community college. These scholarships are not renewable, but they can be used for any college-related expenses including tuition, room and board, books or other fees.

21. Madeline Maurer Scholarship Fund of the Fort Laramie Education Foundation

The Community Foundation of Shelby County supports numerous scholarships to adult and traditional learners in the Shelby County region. The Madeline Maurer Scholarship is one such award that is given to one recipient each year in the amount of $1,000. This scholarship is given to education students who are currently enrolled in college and who have shown a history of school-related or community service.
22. Roberts & Thelma Sargeant Past Graduate/Adult School District Resident Scholarship
Eligibility
– Graduate of the Fairlawn School District
– Currently enrolled in college or trade school

The Community Foundation of Shelby County offers this scholarship only to students who have graduated from the Fairlawn School District. It is offered to newly graduated or to non-traditional students who are returning. The award is valued from $1,000 to $2,000. There are 12 to 25 scholarships awarded to Fairlawn students each year.
23. The Dream.US Scholarship

– Came to the United States before the age of 18

Dream.US Scholarships are offered to immigrants to the United States. These scholarships are available to both traditional and non-traditional students. Scholarships can be used for community college or degree completion. Students can apply either for the Dream.US National scholarship or the Dream.US Opportunity Scholarship, depending upon their state of residence and the school they are attending/plan to attend. Scholarships can range in value but may be up to $80,000. They may cover the cost of tuition, room and board, books and supplies, fees and transportation.
24. Re-Entry Woman Scholarship

The Poway Peñasquitos Branch of the American Association of Women offers the Re-Entry Woman Scholarship to three women each year. The scholarships are awarded at $2,000 each to non-traditional students.
25. Dr. Arnita Young Boswell and Dr. Wynetta A. Frazier Scholarships

These scholarships are provided by the National Hook-Up of Black Women, Inc. This advocacy group supports women of color and their families as they pursue educational and career goals. 26. General Federation of Women’s Clubs Scholarships

The General Federation of Women’s Clubs offers a wide variety of scholarships to women who live in the state of Massachusetts. These scholarships vary greatly in amount and requirements. Most are open to non-traditional and traditional students alike. Many of the scholarships offered through the GFWC are offered for those studying specific fields. Some of these include music, speech therapy, education, art, business, and political science.
27. Grand Rapids Community Foundation

The Grand Rapids Community Foundation offers 11 separate scholarships for students who are from Michigan. The scholarships range in amounts and requirements. Those scholarships that are open to non-traditional students include Donald J. DeYoung Scholarship, Economic Club Business Study Abroad Scholarship, Fred & Lena Meijer Scholarship, Grand Rapids Combined Theatre Scholarship, Miller Johnson Michigan Diversity Law School Scholarship, Warner Norcross + Judd Law School Scholarship and the Warner Norcross + Judd Paralegal and Legal Secretarial Scholarship.
28. Loyola University Scholarships for Adult & Continuing Education

Loyola University is a Jesuit school located in Chicago. This private university is highly respected for its academics with some programs taking top rankings through U.S. News and World Report. Loyola offers many scholarships for adult learners. These awards have wide ranges of amount and eligibility requirements. Along with the adult and continuing education scholarships offered through Loyola University, the school also provides a matching grant of up to $5,250 for those employers who provide tuition assistance.
29. Tuition Waiver for Foster Care Recipients
Eligibility
– Maryland residents
– Age 25 or younger
– Attending a Maryland university or community college
– Former foster care resident
The Maryland Higher Education Commission offers a tuition waiver to former foster care residents who hold residency in and attend a university in the state of Maryland. The waiver is applied to the cost of tuition and fees. It does not cover the cost of room and board, books and materials or other related expenses. This waiver is renewable each year for up to nine years or until a degree is received, whichever comes first, though students must complete a new FAFSA each year.
30. Robert Smithwick Vocational Scholarships

The Palo Alto Rotary Club helps to facilitate the Robert Smithwick Vocational Scholarship. Robert Smithwick was a founder of Foothill-De Anaza Community College District as well as a member of the Rotary Club. These scholarships are offered in amounts of $500 to $2,000. Part-time students receive smaller amounts than full-time. The scholarships are paid directly to the students to be used however they like as they pursue their educational goals.
31. Print and Graphics Scholarship Foundation

– Currently employed in the print or graphics field (part-time students only)
The Print and Graphics Scholarship Foundation seeks to provide scholarships for those individuals who are interested in pursuing education in the graphics field. Scholarships are divided between full- and part-time students. Full-time students may be traditional or non-traditional but must be enrolled in at least 12 credit hours per semester at a not-for-profit institution. Part-time students must provide confirmation proving that they are currently employed in the print or graphics industry. This can include careers that are tangentially connected to the print and graphics field, such as suppliers or support staff.
32. Tall Scholarship Program

Tall Clubs International is a social club for people who are tall. The foundation provides scholarship opportunities for individuals who are nominated by members. These nominees do not need to be members of Tall Clubs International, but they must meet height requirements. Multiple awards are made available through the Tall Club each year. Interested individuals should seek information from their local tall club as not all Tall Clubs around the nation participate in the scholarship program every year.
33. General Henry H. Arnold Education Grant

The Hap Arnold Grant ranges from $500 to $4,000 per year. There are multiple scholarships offered to those students who are either children or spouses of Air Force personnel. The Hap Arnold Grant is made possible through the Air Force Aid Society, which is the official charity of the United States Air Force.
34. UWF Scholarships

– Resident of Jefferson County, Washington

The University Women’s Foundation of Jefferson County offers five scholarships each year to women in Jefferson County, Washington. These scholarships range in amounts and have various requirements. The Elmira K. Beyer Endowed Scholarship provides up to $11,000 to students who have already completed one year of college study. The Lisa T. Painter Endowed Scholarship offers awards for students pursuing law, art or health degrees. The UWF Environmental Scholarship is only awarded to female students studying environmental science. The Constance Anna Pash Scholarship requires applicants to be majoring in a math-related field. The Technical/Career School Scholarship helps women who attend technical schools in Washington.
35. Colorado Garden Foundation Scholarships

Scholarships offered through the Colorado Garden Foundation are made available through the annual Colorado Garden & Home Show and the Colorado Fall Home Show. These scholarships vary in amounts and requirements, though they can offer as much as full tuition or a free-ride to a Colorado higher education institution.
36. Kosciusko County Community Foundation Scholarships

– Resident of Kosciusko County, Indiana

The Kosciusko County Foundation fund offers over 100 scholarships worth more than $500,000 each year. There are many scholarships available through the foundation, but the majority require that applicants be residents of Kosciusko County. Most are only offered to those students who display financial need. The applicant must be currently attending or accepted to an accredited, not-for-profit higher education institution. Scholarships can only be used for tuition and are not available for room and board.
37. M. Verna Betterer Educational Trust

– Resident of Bucks County, Pennsylvania

The M. Verna Betterer Educational Trust was set up through the estate of M. Verna Betterer. This award is made available to both traditional and non-traditional students and it is renewable each year. The amount of the award is up to $14,000 per year. Half of this amount is scholarship money while the other half is considered a loan that must be repaid without interest within five years of graduation.
38. Morris A. Esmily, Jr. Scholarship in Engineering

– Must be enrolled in the engineering program at the University of Colorado

The Sachs Foundation was created to provide opportunities for African American students pursuing excellence in higher education. The foundation offers scholarships and support to students around the country, though the Morris A. Esmily Jr. Scholarship is only open to engineering students at the University of Colorado in Colorado Springs. This scholarship is awarded in the amount of about $6,000 to $8,000 per year.
39. Carl F. Scholarship Fund

– Quay county resident or child of a member of the Tucumcari Lodge No. 27
– Attendee of a non-profit higher education institution
The Albuquerque Community Foundation works with the Tucumcari Lodge No. 27 AF&AM to provide scholarships for New Mexico students pursuing post-secondary or graduate education. Awards vary from $1,200 to $2,400. They are open to both traditional and non-traditional students. All scholarships hold the possibility of renewal. These scholarships are made available through the estate of Carl F. Scott, a New Mexico citizen and World War II veteran.
40. Scholarships for Foster Care Youth
Eligibility
– Must have gone through the foster care system after age 14
– Age 26 or younger
– Demonstrate financial need
– Vermont state resident
The Vermont Student Assistance Corp. was created to help Vermont students plan and pay for college. Scholarships are available specifically for those individuals who were part of the foster care system in the state. There are two scholarships for these students. The Vermont John H. Chafee Education and Training Scholarship ranges from $1,000 to $5,000 and can be used for job-training or post-secondary education. The Emily Lester Vermont Opportunity Scholarship is worth between $1,000 and $3,000 for use while earning a bachelor’s degree.
41. Educational Aid-Fund Scholarships

Vermont State Grange offers support to rural and agricultural areas in the state of Vermont. The scholarships can be used at any higher education institution, including those outside of Vermont. 42. Jeannette Rankin Women’s Scholarship Fund

The Rankin Foundation offers multiple scholarships each year to women throughout the United States. The majority of recipients are single parents. Scholarships can be used at any accredited institution, including online study. They can also be used for study abroad opportunities. The Rankin Foundation also offers the Emerge Scholarship for women age 25 and older who are low-income, Georgia residents.
43. Postsecondary Educational Gratuity Program

The Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency created the Postsecondary Educational Gratuity Program as a way to honor those first-responders who gave their lives while supporting the people of Pennsylvania. This award covers the cost of tuition, fees and on-campus housing for those attending a Pennsylvania state community college or university. It is renewable each year.
44. Nuts and Bolts and Thingamajigs Scholarships

The Nuts and Bolts and Thingamajigs Foundation provides guidance and leadership for those wishing to pursue a future in manufacturing. Along with offering scholarships, NBT offers camps to help train future manufacturers. The scholarships offered through NBT are intended to aid individuals who study one of the pre-approved manufacturing areas, like tool and die, electrical engineering, mechatronics and supply chain management, among many others. Scholarship amounts range from $1,500 to $3,500 annually. They can be used for trade school or university studies. These scholarships are open to traditional and non-traditional students.
45. LouEllen Dabbs Scholarship

– Pursuing an education in business, banking or finance

– Attending Holyoke Community College
The LouEllen Dabbs Scholarship is available to any single parent, male or female, who shows financial need, excellence in academic achievement and is currently enrolled at Holyoke Community College. The scholarship covers the full cost of tuition.
46. Amelia Earhart Fellowship

– Female pursuing a graduate degree in aerospace engineering and space sciences
– One year completion in a graduate program
– Superior academic record
Zonta International created the Amelia Earhart Fellowship program to honor Amelia Earhart and provide women around the country access to the aerospace industry. Up to 30 women each year are given the $10,000 grant to aid them with funding their graduate studies. The Amelia Earhart Fellowship is non-renewable and is not available for post-doctoral research. Women do not have to be Zontians in order to apply.
47. EWI Scholarships

EWI provides access to a variety of scholarships for non-traditional and traditional students through its chapters around the United States and Canada. 48. AAUW Local Scholarships
Eligibility
– Must be female
– Must hold residency in the state where applying
– Other requirements may exist for individual scholarships
The AAUW offers access to a great many scholarships or women around the United States. Local offices each have their own scholarships with varying amounts. The states that provide AAUW scholarships are Alaska, California, Connecticut, Florida, Idaho, Illinois, Massachusetts, Michigan, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, and Virginia.
49. Powering Education Scholarship
Eligibility
– Must have a documented disability
– B average or equivalent GPA
– Accepted into a post-secondary institution
– Must have attended high school in Maine
Alpha One offers three $2,000 scholarships each year to students from Maine who are living with disabilities. These scholarships are open to traditional and non-traditional students. They can be used for either undergraduate or graduate school programs. This scholarship is just one of the opportunities Alpha One offers to individuals with disabilities in Maine. The organization also provides grants, peer services, plans for transitioning into independent living and employment assistance.
50. Katie McDonald Scholarship
Eligibility
– Must have Down Syndrome
– Pursuing educational or job training, or
– Pursuing a college degree
UPS for DownS created the Katie McDonald Scholarship to provide two $2,500 scholarships for individuals with Down Syndrome. One of the scholarships is given to a person seeking job training post-high school while the other is given to a person in a junior college, traditional college or graduate school. The organization also offers the $2,500 UPS for DownS Sibling scholarship for an individual who has a sibling with Down Syndrome. The $500 Tiffany Diamond Memorial scholarship is available as well. UPS for DownS, which is based out of Chicago, has been awarding these scholarships for more than 35 years.
