Ottawa University offers more than 25 degree options for undergraduate students, as well as a handful of graduate degrees. Some of the most popular programs at the university include those in exercise science, biology, business administration, management, psychology, and history. When it was founded in 1865, Ottawa University was known as Roger Williams University, and the institution has grown from a single location in Ottawa, Kansas, to one with several adult campuses throughout the United States and a residential campus in Arizona. The university has approximately 4,000 students attending all of its campuses, with 700 students enrolled for study in Surprise, Arizona, and 850 students attending the Ottawa, Kansas campus.
The university’s official colors are gold and black, and its motto is “The Truth Will Set You Free.” The oldest building on the university’s campus is Tauy Jones Hall, which was built in 1969. Students are nicknamed the Braves when they participate in games in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics. The university is a member of the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference, which is the second-oldest conference in the organization.

Ottawa University is regionally accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. The university is also approved for operations in a number of states with approvals from the Arizona State Department of Education, the Arizona State Board for Private Post Secondary Education, the Indiana Commission on Proprietary Education, and the Educational Approval Board of the State of Wisconsin.
The university is also affiliated with the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education, the Arizona Education Association, the American Baptist Churches in the USA, and the American Baptist Association of Colleges and Universities. The educational programs offered by the university are approved by the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education and the Kansas State Department of Education.
Ottawa University Application Requirements
The application process for Ottawa University begins with the official application and continues with a $50 application fee for undergraduate students and a $75 application fee for graduate students. The student’s official transcripts from all previously attended institutions should also be sent to the university. Transcripts should be sent to the campus’s registrar.
The university will conditionally admit students who provide unofficial copies of transcripts with formal acceptance offered after the university has received the student’s official transcripts. Students who have questions about the application process can call the school directly for assistance and speak to an enrollment advisor. The university indicates that it has a generous transfer credit policy with students being able to transfer up to 80 hours of credits for undergraduate programs.
Tuition and Financial Aid
Full-time tuition for students at Ottawa University who are enrolled in 12 to 17 hours is $28,980 for the year. Part-time tuition is billed at a rate of $1,185 per credit hour. Students will also be assessed overload tuition for every credit over 18 in which they enroll. Overload tuition is $790 per credit hour. Students can also enroll in one course per semester and pay $595.
Some programs feature different tuition and fees. For example, the teacher certification program is $530 per credit, the Master of Business Administration program is variable in its cost, and auditing a course as an undergraduate student is $50 per course. Students who want a space in a residence hall will pay tuition between $2,425.00 and $4,307.50 per semester. The university also offers off-campus apartments, as well as a dining club for meals.
Students can qualify for financial aid at Ottawa University that may come from the federal government, the state, the university, or private sources.
