Rockhurst UniversityRockhurst University was first chartered in 1910 by Revered Michael Dowling as the Academy of Rockhurst College for high school classes. A decade later, Rockhurst graduated its inaugural collegiate class and became regionally accredited. Now co-educational, Rockhurst University is a private, four-year research institution rooted in Roman Catholic and Jesuit values. Following the motto of “Learning, Leadership, and Service,” Rockhurst educates around 2,200 undergrad and 670 post-graduate students each year. Sprawling across 55 urban acres, Rockhurst is based in Kansas City, Missouri’s largest Metro, around Country Club Plaza. The Carnegie Foundation has instilled Rockhurst University with its community engagement classification.

According to the U.S. News, Rockhurst is the 18th best regional university and 18th top college for veterans in the Midwest for 2016. It’s recognized for America’s 118th best physical therapy and 153rd top part-time MBA programs. Forbes ranked Rockhurst University as the 173rd best private college with the 238th most grateful graduates nationwide. Rockhurst is lauded for having Missouri’s fourth highest return on tuition investment. Washington Monthly magazine crowned Rockhurst as the Midwest’s 90th best bang for the buck and nation’s 146th top master’s-level university for civic engagement. Last evaluated in 2013, Rockhurst University is institutionally accredited via the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Schools and Colleges (HLC-NCA). This regional accreditation agency is recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. Specific programs also hold accreditations by the:

Rockhurst University Application Requirements

Rockhurst University implements a selective admissions process with an average acceptance rate of 76 percent. First-year applicants must be graduating from a licensed secondary school or earning a GED certificate. Academic rigor is a major admissions factor, so taking AP and Honors courses is suggested. A college-prep curriculum with at least four years of English, math, and science is encouraged. On average, Rockhurst freshmen carry a high school GPA of 3.67. Admitted students also achieve a mean ACT score of 26 or SAT score of 1154 for critical reading and math. Class rank, awards, recommendations, and extra-curriculars are considered.

Transferring to Rockhurst University is possible for students with at least 12 credits earned at regionally accredited colleges. Core credits obtained with a minimum “C” average are eligible. Incoming transfers should maintain a minimum 2.5 GPA to qualify. Associate of Arts (A.A.) degrees are acceptable for transfer and graduation within two years. Any non-U.S. citizens from non-English speaking countries must submit a computer-based TOEFL score over 213 or minimum ACT English score of 20. Graduate applicants to Rockhurst must hold a four-year baccalaureate from an accredited institution. Preference is given to students holding a minimum 3.25 GPA or GRE score over 150.

Tuition and Financial Aid

Full-time undergraduates at Rockhurst will pay $17,440 per semester. For under 12 or over 18 hours, students must pay $1,164 per credit. Adult evening courses are reduced to $582. Housing is estimated to cost $5,880 for standard, double occupancy per year. All-access meal plans add $3,500 annually. Commuting students pay a $125 parking fee. Total annual cost of attendance is approximately $48,864 for undergraduates. Generally, graduate programs will charge $835 per credit hour. The AACSB-accredited MBA costs less at $660 per credit. Alumni receive a discounted rate for $417 per credit hour.

The NCES reports that 100 percent of starting, full-time Rockhurst University earn assistance for tuition. Financial aid packages average $24,231 per year. Institutional awards, such as the Trustee Scholarship, Tom D. Harmon Scholarship, Finucane Service Scholarship, and Loyola Scholarship, are numerous. Some may receive the Federal Pell Grant, TEACH Grant, FSEOG Grant, or Iraq and Afghanistan Service Grant. In-state residents should apply for the Missouri Higher Education Academic Scholarship or Access Missouri Grant. There’s a need-based Rockhurst Grant too. FAFSA forms could qualify learners for Federal Work-Study (FWS). The School of Graduate and Professional Studies has limited, tuition-waiving assistantships. If needed, students may borrow Federal Perkins, Stafford, Grad PLUS, or private loans.

Student Experience

As one of America’s 28 Jesuit universities, Rockhurst offers a strong liberal arts education through a social justice-minded lens to prepare servant leaders. Across its four schools, students can select from 40 bachelor’s and nine graduate programs, including the Doctor of Physical Therapy. Unique undergraduate majors include Catholic studies, fundraising leadership, global studies, paralegal studies, and strategic communication. Seven pre-professional tracks are available for dentistry to law and pharmacy. The student-faculty ratio of 12:1 facilitates good interaction with world-class professors rather than teaching assistants. Added support is available in the Aylward-Dunn Learning Center and Greenlease Library.

Following Ignatian philosophy, Rockhurst University, service learning outside the classroom is stressed for ethics-based education. 97 percent of students help complete over 25,000 total hours of community service yearly. Service trips are arranged to El Salvador, Ecuador, Guatemala, and other third-world nations. Students can participate in Kairos-style retreats, such as the Frosh Getaway or Lumberjack Service Retreat to Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Along with daily mass in Mabee Chapel, students may join Christian Life Communities (CLCs) for faith-sharing activities. Around 52 percent of Rockhurst’s student body resides on-campus in three residential halls and Townhouse Village.

During spare time, students get involved in nearly 70 campus-based clubs, including four sororities and four fraternities. Whether they’re debating for Model UN, advocating with Voices for Justice, shaking it with Recreational Dance Club, or pledging Alpha Psi Omega, students are active. Campus involvement begins with Rockhurst’s energetic, four-day orientation. Athletes can join the Hawks on 14 varsity teams competing in NCAA Division II. The men’s soccer team is notable for playing in 17 national tournaments and making the Final Four 10 times. Rockhurst University also offers fun intramurals, including hockey, spirit club, tennis, and ultimate Frisbee.
