Michigan Technological University offers both degree programs for undergrads and graduate students as well as a dual enrollment track for students who are still in high school. This program is open to those with a grade point average of 3.0 or higher who have approval from both their schools and parents. Students need to have their guidance counselors help them pick out courses and submit their transcripts, but they’ll also need to complete the university’s general application. Michigan Technological University requires that students submit an ACT/SAT score or take an on-campus placement test.
Incoming freshmen can choose from 55 different majors, including wildlife ecology and conservation, applied physics, psychology, and marketing. The university offers one of the state’s only forestry degree programs. It asks students to spend 14 weeks working in its research forest, which covers more than 4,000 acres. They also have the chance to design a forest management plan that will help the conservation efforts in a local forest. The natural resources management program is similar but ranks as one of the top six programs of its type in the world. Majors can customize their degrees with minors in plant biotechnology, ecology, or plant sciences.
The university also offers many technological degree programs such as a major in mining engineering. Not only do majors learn about the construction and design of mines, but they learn about the history of mining in Michigan too. Many required courses take field trips to local mines. Students also have the option of working in those mines through internships that they do while taking courses that include Drilling and Blasting, Soil Mechanics, Mineral Science, and Mine Planning and Design.
Through the Michigan Technological University Graduate School, students can choose from more than 70 traditional and accelerated master’s degree programs. The applied science education program is available online and on-campus and prepares students for working in a classroom. It includes courses such as The Engineering Process, Designing Education Research, Introduction to Education Research, and Assessment and Evaluation. The kinesiology program offers students the option of doing a thesis or dissertation based on their fieldwork. Majors will take courses that include Cardiac Rehabilitation, Health and Fitness, and Exercise and Stress Physiology. Michigan Technological University is a public university with a 925-acre campus in Houghton, Michigan. Established in 1885 as the Michigan Mining School, it originally offered programs for students who wanted to work in the numerous copper mines in the area. Though the mining engineering programs were popular, the school changed its name several times and served as the Michigan College of Mines and the Michigan College of Mining and Technology before becoming Michigan Technological University.
Some of the nicknames that it uses today include Michigan Tech and MTU. MTU now offers programs through five colleges, many of which focus on engineering, technology, or computing. Michigan Technological University Accreditation Details
At MTU, all degree programs have accreditation from the Higher Learning Commission (HLC). With this type of regional accreditation, students can access the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and complete it online to get a financial aid package. Most of the programs offered by the university also have accreditation from the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET), including those in electrical engineering technology and computer network and system administration.
Michigan Technological University Application Requirements
Michigan Tech has a list of classes that it recommends students take in high school to prepare for a degree program. Those courses include Calculus and two other math classes as well as Physics or Chemistry. Prospective undergrads with a grade point average below 3.0 need to submit a score from the ACT or SAT, but those with a higher GPA have the option of applying without a test score. The university requires a test score from those who attended a home school program too. Though MTU does not charge an application fee, it asks that students set up online accounts and use their accounts to apply and submit any required online documents, including a high school transcript. Students applying to the dual enrollment program need to meet the same requirements.
Incoming graduate students also need to apply online through a portal that doesn’t charge an application fee. They need to have the minimum of a bachelor’s degree or its equivalent and a transcript from the school where they earned most of their credits. MTU requires that transcripts show the courses taken and grades received in at least six semesters. The application also asks for both a statement of purpose and a personal statement. Some graduate programs require a resume, writing sample, and letters of recommendation.
Tuition and Financial Aid
The estimated cost of attendance at Michigan Tech is $17,031 per year for Michigan undergrads and $37,333 a year for nonresidents. Undergrads who plan to live on the MTU campus pay around $11,300 a year for a meal plan and dorm room. MTU awards undergrads an average financial aid package of more than $23,000 a year in funds that they will not pay back, including grants and academic awards. Those with higher grades and test scores who submit their scores can get more academic grants and scholarships. Undergrads can use federal loans also.
Graduate students attending Michigan Tech pay an average of $18,500 a year as an in-state student and $20,759 as a nonresident. Each department caps tuition at nine to 12 credits, which means that students only pay the amount for those credits, even if they take more. the university also caps the fees associated with lab courses. Teaching, administrative and research assistantships are available to qualifying students. These programs provide funding for the work that students do on-campus.
