SUNY Canton was opened by St. Lawrence University and chartered by the State Legislature in 1906 as its first public, two-year college. In 1941, the School of Agriculture was renamed the New York Agricultural & Technical Institute. Seven years later, it joined the SUNY system for associate technology degrees. Adopting its current name in 1987, Canton granted its first Bachelor of Science in 1997. During the 2000s, SUNY Canton developed a consortium with Potsdam, Clarkson, and St. Lawrence.
