Ball State University may have a long history, but their academic philosophy is anything but traditional. Ball State University Application Requirements
First-year freshman will need to complete and submit the university’s online application for undergraduate admission and housing. Candidates must request that their official GED or high school transcripts be sent directly to the admissions office of admissions as well as their ACT or SAT scores. The transcript must show that the student has successfully completed four years of English, three years of social studies and three years of science. Three years of advanced math, such as algebra and geometry, are strongly recommended. Although studying a foreign language is not required, it will strengthen the application.
Some students submit a single page statement that highlights their academic goals, research credentials and extracurricular participation in sports, student government, civic organizations and charitable groups. In order for transfer students to be considered for admission, they will need at least a minimum GPA of 2.0. However, courses from technical, vocational and remedial programs are not accepted. Ball State University also does not accepted non-regionally accredited coursework. The only accepted accrediting associations are the Western, Southern, Northwest, New England and Middle States’ Commissions.
Tuition and Financial Aid
Approximately 75 percent of Ball State University students receive some type of financial aid support, which is usually merit-based or needs-based. For local Indianan students, the average cost of tuition is very low. The average tuition rate per semester is $7,698 with room and board starting at $8,715. Other costs include student services fees of $1,294, university technology fees of $336 and transportation fees of $100. The tuition costs for out-of-state students is drastically higher – $23,472. The University provides ample student employment opportunities through on-campus jobs and federal work-study programs.
Students from certain Midwestern states may qualify for the exclusive tuition discounts. The Midwest Student Exchange Program (MSEP) applies to eligible students who live in the nearby states of Kansas, Illinois, Michigan, Missouri, Minnesota, Nebraska and Wisconsin. Indiana also participates in the Ohio Reciprocity Agreement, which means lower tuition rates for eligible residents of certain counties in western Ohio. Other common types of aid include grants that don’t have to be paid back, loans that must be paid back with interest and fee waivers for select students. Some students may qualify for financial aid through Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) and Veterans educational benefits programs.
Because the university is so big, some potential students assume that they will have an impersonal experience. However, classes that involve lectures usually only have 20 to 30 students in attendance. Most students feel that campus housing is comfortable and that living in the residence halls are great ways to meet new people, make new friends and have engaging social experiences. Students feel safe at Ball State University because there are emergency boxes located all throughout campus, but students rarely need to use them. The University even offers test and email services for serious disasters or emergencies. While the athletics facilities are nice, the research facilities are even nicer. Thus, student attendance at sporting events is low because Ball State University is driven by scientific research and achievements.
Ball State University offers approximately 190 majors and 130 minors, so students can easily find a program that meets their personal needs and professional goals. The University’s Core Curriculum courses are designed to help students explore different fields, experience new information and translate knowledge into actions. Some of the unique undergraduate majors include aquatics PE, field botany, classical languages, digital sports production and merchandising management.
Undergraduate communications majors can choose from a bachelor’s degree in public, interpersonal and organizational communication. A public communication degree program will teach students about the principles of successful public speaking and campaign communication. Students will study the historical and modern art of speech making by exploring how ideas, words and persuasion affects audiences. Other classes will include politics, psychology and sociology. A major in organizational communication will learn the business skills needed to effectively communicate across large organizations. Courses will cover organizational communication concepts, functions and applications.
The advertising program offers three exciting options: media planning, creative development and account management. A media planning concentration trains students how to ensure that advertising is seen by the right people in the right place and time. Media planners often become advertising account strategists. Creative development students will take more technical classes related to graphic design and digital ad creation. Students will learn web design, copywriting and concept development techniques. An account management specialization prepares graduates who become client liaisons and masters of diplomacy. All advertising students will study strategic planning, marketing management and advertising research.
