About San Jose State University

SJSU was established in 1857 as Minns’ Evening Normal School, a teacher training academy in the early California frontier. In 1862, it became the California State Normal School, and the first graduating class of 52 all-female students earned their diplomas that year. In 1934, the California State Normal School became San Jose State College, and in 1955, it was nationally accredited by the Association of American Universities. In 1974, after several more name changes, the name was finally changed to San Jose State University. Today, SJSU is the largest university in Silicon Valley, and it is the largest college campus in America’s tenth-largest city. In 2007, SJSU celebrated its sesquicentennial anniversary. SJSU is a relatively competitive college, and the acceptance rate is slightly above 50 percent. Freshman applicants must include a high school transcript or GED documentation with their applications.
