About the University of Evansville

On February 10, 1854, John C. Moore drafted the initial charter of the Moores Hill Male and Female Collegiate Institute. This was an unusual beginning because only four other universities were coed at that time. The first classes began on September 9, 1856. The university changed its name roughly 30 years later and became Moores Hill College.

Three decades after that, because Evansville was the only city within 50 miles not to have an accredited university, Moores Hill College left its sleepy little town and moved to Evansville. The move took two years, and it reopened as Evansville College. It stayed that way for a little less than 50 years and became the University of Evansville after incorporation by the Indiana State Senate in 1967.

According to U.S. News and World Report, the school is ranked No. 7 in the Midwest Region. It is also ranked No. 7 as a “Best Value School” and No. 6 among “Best Colleges for Veterans.” The combined focus on liberal arts and critical thinking has led the University of Evansville to a No. 14 ranking as a “Most Innovative School.” The university selects seven in 10 students who apply for admittance.
