About University of California Davis

In 1868, the Morrill Act created the University of California as a land-grant institution. In 1899, then-secretary of the California State Agricultural Society, Peter J. Shields, developed an interest in dairy education. This led to a proposal before the legislature to create a dairy school in Kings County the following year, but it failed to pass into law. In 1903, a second bill, drafted by Shields, proposed the State Dairy School and Experimental Farm. Although the second bill passed, it was vetoed by then-Governor George Pardee as he felt it was not broad enough. The third version of the bill, which authorized the University of California to purchase land and establish a dairy school, passed in 1905.

Land was identified in Davisville and the legislature authorized $132,000 to build a campus and purchase equipment. In 1907, the name of the town was changed to Davis to avoid confusion with nearby Danville. The State Dairy School and Experimental Farm opened in 1909 and, in 1914, the first women were admitted, transferring from the University of California, Berkeley.

Today, there are more than 36,000 students enrolled at the University of California Davis and it is the only campus in the University of California system offering professional schools in business management, education, law, medicine, nursing, and veterinary medicine. UC Davis is a global leader in sustainability-related research and instruction, applied technology and transformative projects.
