About Affordable Online Bachelor’s Degrees

Despite the rise in admissions rates for two-year technical schools and community colleges, students are still flocking to four-year colleges and universities for quality education. According to the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), enrollment in a bachelor’s degree program is still the most popular way students gain a postsecondary education. By 2029, an estimated 11.1 million students will be studying at a four-year bachelor’s degree-granting institution.

For many of these students, online learning will constitute some or all of their educational experiences in college. In fact, the NCES reports that nearly 35% of undergraduate students participated in some form of distance learning in 2018 while 14% were enrolled in fully online programs.

To keep up with this trend in online education, more and more colleges and universities across the nation are investing in their distance learning programs. In particular, these schools are offering more of their courses and programs online and creating new bachelor’s degrees exclusively for their online students. If you’re interested in participating in this exciting development in distance learning for undergraduate students, then you’ll want to read on.

Online Bachelor’s Degree Programs: Admissions

Is it difficult to get into online bachelor’s degree programs? Are there different admissions criteria for online students? What is the process for applying to 100% online colleges? These are just a few of the questions you may have if you’re seriously considering affordable online universities for your post-secondary education.

To get the most precise information available about a particular college or university and their online bachelor degree programs, you’ll need to speak to an admissions officer. However, you can rest easy knowing that most schools have similar (if not exact) criteria for online admissions as they do for their traditional on-campus students. Generally speaking, you’ll be required to fill out an application and send it in along with a small fee. In addition, you’ll be asked to submit your academic transcript from high school. If you’ve taken college classes at any other college or university, you’ll need to send in your grades from those courses as well. This allows the school to evaluate what kind of student you are and predict how successful you’ll be if and when you’re admitted. Some colleges and universities will mandate specific GPA requirements, and some are more competitive than others, so be prepared for this.

In addition to an academic transcript, most schools still require college entrance exam scores (i.e., SAT or ACT), though there is evidence that this requirement may be on its way out. For now, expect to have to submit these scores unless you’re informed otherwise.

Other admissions requirements for online bachelor’s degree programs could include personal statements, writing samples, letters of recommendation, and even interviews.

Advantages of Earning A Bachelor’s Degree Online

If you’re able to get into an online bachelor’s degree program, you’ll be poised to enjoy the many benefits of online learning. Some of these advantages include the freedom to complete coursework on your own schedule, the convenience of skipping the commute to campus, and the lower tuition expenses associated with some of the cheapest online degree programs. Other positive aspects of online degree programs include the ability to create your own unique learning environment, 24/7 access to course material and learning resources, and the ability to communicate with professors and classmates via multiple formats like email, text, and teleconferencing.

Drawbacks to Getting Your Bachelor’s Online

It’s not all smooth sailing for students pursuing their bachelor’s degree online, though. Like anything else, there are certain drawbacks and disadvantages to online learning. While not all of these will apply to your specific learning style or circumstances, they’re still worthy of consideration. Some of these downsides to online degree programs include the lack of oversight from professors, less structure in terms of the learning environment and class scheduling, and decreased interaction with classmates, for example. With these potential obstacles in mind, it’s ultimately up to you to determine whether a virtual learning experience is right for you.

Types of Bachelor’s Degree Online Programs

So far, we’ve been discussing all online bachelor’s degree programs under one large umbrella, but the truth is—they’re not all the same. When considering online undergraduate education, you’ll want to take a close look at all of your options.

Hybrid Bachelor’s Degree Options

Some undergraduate degree programs combine distance education with traditional on-campus instruction. For many students, these hybrid offerings provide the best of both worlds in terms of convenience and overall experience. If your schedule allows it, you may want to consider the advantages of attending class in person for part of the time. For instance, you’ll get more face time with your professor, and you may find that a classroom setting is more conducive to focused learning.

Asynchronous Online Bachelor’s Programs

Even bachelor’s degree programs offered entirely online can differ from one another. For example, asynchronous online bachelor’s degrees are the most flexible kind in that they allow students to work at their own pace and on their own schedule. These programs don’t require specific log-in times, for instance, and provide students with access to course materials (including pre-recorded lectures) at any time of day or night. For particularly busy students or those who have mastered self-discipline, these asynchronous offerings are often the best choice.

Synchronous Online Bachelor’s Degrees

In comparison with asynchronous bachelor’s degree online programs, synchronous offerings are less convenient but offer more engagement. Students enrolled in synchronous online bachelor’s degree programs are required to attend virtual class meetings at pre-determined times of the day and week. It’s a lot like having a traditional class schedule except that you can show up to class by simply turning on your computer rather than making a commute. Technology like streaming video and web conferencing makes these types of online degree programs more interactive than their asynchronous counterparts, but you’ll have to keep a regular schedule in order to enjoy this benefit.

Online Bachelor’s Degree Completion Programs

Some of the online bachelor’s degrees you’ll find in our ranking aren’t traditional undergraduate programs, but rather degree completion programs. Online degree completion programs, as their name suggests, are abbreviated offerings that enable students who have already taken some college courses toward a bachelor’s degree to complete the requirements for this degree online. These programs allow students to transfer in the credits they’ve already earned so that they don’t have to start over on their bachelor’s degree. The exact number and type of credits a degree completion program will accept will depend on the school.

Accelerated Online Bachelor’s Degree Programs

Traditionally, bachelor’s degree programs were designed to be completed within four years of full-time study. With online learning, however, it’s possible to shorten this completion time by enabling students to take more classes per term. This is how accelerated online bachelor’s degree programs work. Students enrolled in such programs can cut down on the time it takes to earn their credentials and get on with their careers or postgraduate study. Keep in mind, though, that these accelerated bachelor’s degree online options aren’t actually shorter (at least not in terms of curriculum requirements); they just require that you do more work in less time.

Online Bachelor’s Degrees: Curriculum

More and more colleges and universities are designing online bachelor’s degrees that feature the same curriculum as their on-campus programs. This means that while course delivery will be invariably different in an online program, the skills and information you receive from the program will be identical. This isn’t the case for all online bachelor degree programs, though. Check the school’s website or speak to an admissions counselor in order to confirm curriculum details.

The curricula for bachelor’s degree programs (whether online, hybrid, or in-person) will vary considerably from one program to the next depending in large part on the academic subject you choose to study. Still, most of these undergraduate offerings follow a similar format and include three to five main components: general education courses, major core courses, specialty area classes (if applicable), and electives. Some may also include an experiential learning component such as a practicum experience or internship.

General Education Courses

All online bachelor’s degrees (and their on-campus counterparts) require students to take what is called general education courses. These courses aren’t major-specific, meaning they may or may not relate to the major area of study you’ve chosen. Instead, they cover the basic concepts that comprise fundamental academic areas like the language and literature, mathematics, physical and social sciences, the arts, and more. General education classes make up a large portion of the content you’ll be required to study in an undergraduate degree program. The exact number of required general education classes will vary by school and program, but you can expect up to half of the curriculum for an online bachelor’s degree program to be comprised of general ed requirements.

Since they are somewhat universal, we will list some sample general education course titles here to give you a better example of what to expect as you complete this component of your online bachelor degree program:

  • English Literature and Composition
  • College Algebra
  • U.S. History
  • Introduction to Public Speaking
  • Quantitative Reasoning
  • International Languages and Culture
  • Biological Studies

Major Core Courses

Another large component of the curriculum for online bachelor’s degrees programs is made up of major core courses. Unlike general education classes, major core courses cover topics directly related to your chosen area of study. For example, if you are studying to earn a bachelor’s in business administration, your major core courses will address topics like business law, human resources, business statistics, principles of leadership, and the like. The information provided in these courses will prepare you for employment in your desired field after graduation or for further study in a master’s degree program.

Specialty Area Classes

Many accredited online colleges and universities offer their students the opportunity to customize their degree by choosing a concentration or specialty area. These options may also be called emphases or focus areas. By choosing to specialize in a specific sub-field of your major, you can become more knowledgeable about specific topics within your area of study and thus, become more employable. Not all online bachelor’s degrees include concentration or specialty options, and they are more common in broad academic disciplines like business administration, education, and engineering, for example.

Electives

Most bachelor’s degree online programs will also offer students the opportunity to choose from elective classes as part of the curriculum. These courses are not specifically required, but you still may have to take a certain number of electives to fulfill degree requirements. Elective classes cover topics that may not be essential to your future career; instead, they cover areas of interest and/or introduce topics you may want to pursue further in a master’s program.

Experiential Learning Component

Most online bachelor’s degrees will also require (or encourage) that you participate in an experiential learning experience as part of the curriculum. These hands-on components of the degree plan are usually culminating elements of the program that enable you to process and apply what you’ve learned over the duration of your studies. The exact type of experiential learning component you participate in will depend on a number of factors like your major, program, and school, for instance, but examples include internships, practicums, and capstones. These experiences often take place off-campus in places like public schools, factories, and office buildings. Online students are often able to arrange experiential learning experiences at a location near their home.
