About MBA Programs

Overview

Master of Business Administration—or MBA— programs represent the logical next step for professionals with an undergraduate business degree who want to further their careers. With an MBA, the doors of opportunity in the corporate world fling open, lighting paths to C-level offices and positions such as chief financial officer (CFO), chief technology officer (CTO), and even chief executive officer (CEO).

These academic pursuits aren’t just for students with a background in business, though. Professionals in a variety of industries and fields find a business degree to be worthwhile to their career endeavors. This includes healthcare professionals.

MBA programs have become increasingly versatile, too. It’s not uncommon to find a dozen or more specialization options for students to choose from.

Common MBA Specializations/Areas of Emphasis

  • General Management
  • Strategic Management
  • Change Management
  • International Business
  • Finance
  • Marketing
  • Supply Chain Management
  • Operations Management
  • Entrepreneurship
  • Homeland Security
  • Technology Management
  • Hospitality Management

The Need for Physicians MBA Programs

Most physicians graduate from medical school with a strong desire to help others and plenty of clinical know-how to do just that. Few finish their MD programs with any sort of business knowledge, though. This skill gap can create a huge problem for doctors who want to run their own practices or take on advanced leadership roles in hospitals and other healthcare settings.

This is where an MBA for physicians program steps in to bridge the gap. These types of academic offerings allow doctors to learn more about the business side of medicine, including accounting, human resources, operations, management, marketing, and more.

Is a Physician’s MBA Necessary?

Many doctors with a desire to advance their careers and become better leaders in the healthcare sector find themselves pondering this question: Is an MBA necessary? Unfortunately, there is no short or easy answer. It really depends on what you hope to accomplish.

If you’re simply looking to sharpen your business acumen within your current role as a physician, then a MBA is helpful, but it’s probably not necessary. There are other ways to accomplish this same goal, and many of these alternatives are cheaper and less time-consuming.

For example, many professional organizations in healthcare offer classes and workshops designed to train physicians in the business aspect of the industry. Often, doctors can even earn leadership certificates for completing these classes.

If you’re looking to advance your career by opening up opportunities for leadership positions within your current organization or another healthcare facility, then you may benefit more from an MBA program. Even so, there are sometimes alternatives to this route. Many healthcare organizations offer in-house training programs that can position you for career growth.

In some cases, earning an MBA is the only way to qualify for certain senior leadership positions in the healthcare industry. If this describes your current situation, then you may want to consider an online MBA for physicians.

About Online MBAs for Physicians

Online learning has transformed higher education in nearly every academic field, including both business and medicine. It should come as no surprise that there are now numerous opportunities for students who want to earn an MBA in healthcare without attending face-to-face classes. And the demand for these types of programs is high. Doctors who realize they need management skills don’t often have the time to pursue a traditional MBA while maintaining their practices.

Admissions Requirements for Online MBA Programs in Healthcare

Getting into an online MBA program for physicians can be challenging, but not if you have the right credentials. Typically, students who have successfully completed an MD program will have no problem meeting the requirements for MBA admission. Though these requirements will vary by school and program, some common requests from universities include:

  • Academic transcripts
  • Minimum GPA
  • GMAT scores
  • Letters of recommendation

Some schools may also require that prospective students undergo an interview process before being admitted into an online physician’s MBA program.

Types of Online Physician’s MBAs

Most students choose an online MBA in healthcare management or administration for its flexibility. While all online offerings are flexible, they aren’t all flexible in the same way. Let’s discuss some of the different types of MBA programs for doctors.

Fully Online Versus Hybrid Online MBA Programs for Doctors

While most online MBA programs for physicians are offered fully online, some are classified as hybrid programs because they require campus visits. These required visits can range from a single day of orientation to several multi-day residencies per term.

While fully online MBA programs are arguably more convenient, hybrid programs have their advantages as well. These types of academic offerings can enable students to enjoy the interactivity of a traditional classroom program while still completing most of their degree requirements online.

Asynchronous Versus Synchronous MBAs in Healthcare Management

Even fully online healthcare MBA programs can vary in terms of content delivery. Asynchronous programs are self-paced, meaning students have the freedom to complete assignments and review course material on their own time. Synchronous programs, on the other hand, are less flexible and require that students log into their classes at a specific time on specific days of the week. Some online MBA programs for doctors include a blend of synchronous and asynchronous elements.

Online MBA for Physicians Curriculum

Though there is no standard curriculum for physician’s MBA programs, most of these offerings follow similar guidelines. Exact course titles may differ, but the majority of programs consist of four basic elements: foundational business courses, core MBA classes, concentration-specific classes, and a capstone course or project.

Foundational business courses are those courses designed for students new to the business field (i.e., those without an undergraduate degree in business). These classes provide an introduction to the basics of business in areas such as finance, accounting, and human resources, for instance.

Core MBA courses represent the majority of the credit hours for an online MBA for physicians. These classes will range in levels from intermediate to advanced and address topics such as economics, business law, leadership, and management concepts, for instance.

Concentration-specific classes in healthcare management and administration cover business issues directly related to the healthcare industry. This could include topics like healthcare policies and regulations, financial issues in healthcare, healthcare marketing, and more.

Capstone elements of an online physician’s MBA allow students to process what they’ve learned over the duration of the program. Typical capstones include seminars, portfolios, research projects, and internships, for example.

Alternatives to an MBA for Physicians

An MBA in healthcare may be the most popular option for physicians with a desire to hone their business skills, but it’s not the only one. Here are some alternatives:

  • Master of Medical Management
  • Master of Science (MS) in Population Health
  • Master in Healthcare Quality and Safety Management
  • Master of Advanced Study in Health Informatics
  • Master of Science in the Science of Healthcare Delivery
