About Online RN to BSN Programs: Overview

RN to BSN (Registered Nurse to Bachelor of Science in Nursing) programs are convenient degree completion programs that allow registered nurses with an associate’s degree in nursing—or AND—to earn their bachelor’s degree. Increasingly, colleges and universities are offering these programs via distance education in order to maximize their convenience and flexibility. Many full-time working nurses find these programs ideal as they can keep their day jobs while advancing in their roles as health professionals.

While it’s still possible to gain employment as a registered nurse with just an associate’s degree, there are many incentives for nurses to earn their Bachelor of Science in Nursing. Among the most compelling are opportunities for specialized positions in nursing as well as a higher salary. Moreover, many health care employers prefer applicants with a bachelor’s degree, particularly hospitals and larger health care facilities.

Types of Online RN to BSN Programs

Students interested in enrolling in an online RN to BSN program should carefully consider their options as there are several different types of programs available. Below, we’ll discuss some of these variations.

Full-Time Versus Part-Time Online RN to BSN Programs

Depending on your work schedule and/or family obligations, you’ll need to decide whether you want to pursue your BSN on a part-time or full-time basis. Some schools offer one or the other type of program, while others will allow students to choose a particular track that meets their scheduling requirements.

Of course, the type of course load you choose will also affect your completion time. If you wish to finish your bachelor’s degree faster, you’ll need to opt for a full-time schedule. Some accelerated online RN to BSN programs can be completed in just a year of full-time study.

Hybrid Versus Fully Online RN to BSN

Another distinction amongst the various online RN to BSN programs available to students with an associate’s degree is the amount of coursework offered online. Generally, programs are available in a hybrid or fully online format. Hybrid RN to BSN options blend traditional classroom learning with convenient online coursework. These programs are appealing to students who benefit from increased interactivity and face-to-face instruction.

Because of certain scheduling requirements, though, many nursing students require a fully online program. If this describes you, be sure to check with an admissions counselor at the school you’re interested in attending to ensure that there are no on-campus requirements.

Synchronous Versus Asynchronous RN to BSN Online Options

Even fully online RN to BSN programs can vary in terms of course delivery, however. The primary distinction here is between synchronous and asynchronous programs. Synchronous online RN to BSN programs are more rigid in nature and rely on live-streamed classes and real-time discussions for the majority of content delivery. While these types of programs have reportedly increased engagement amongst students, they can present some inconveniences and scheduling conflicts for busy, working nurses.

On the other hand, asynchronous online RN to BSN options are highly flexible offerings that allow nursing students to complete required coursework on their own time. These programs feature learning platforms that students can log into to view recorded lectures, participate in offline discussion forums, and submit assignments at any time of the day or night.

Some online RN to BSN programs combine elements of asynchronous and synchronous course delivery.

Admissions Requirements for Online RN to BSN Programs

Just as online RN to BSN programs vary in nature, so too do their admissions requirements. Still, most programs will require applicants to hold a current and valid RN license as well as an Associate’s in Nursing (AND) credential. Additional requirements may include a minimum grade point average, letters of recommendation, and/or writing samples, for instance.

Curriculum for Online RN to BSN Degree Programs

While there’s no standard curriculum for online RN to BSN programs, most cover the same basic topics in nursing and healthcare. Since these programs require students to transfer in credits from their associate’s degree in nursing curriculum, there is usually no general education requirement. Instead, the majority of the degree plan is comprised of core nursing classes. These courses cover topics such as healthcare policy, nursing leadership, community health, nursing research, and nursing informatics, for instance. Some sample course titles are listed below for your reference. Keep in mind that these will vary from program to program.

Sample RN to BSN Core Classes

Transitions in Professional Nursing

Community Health Nursing

Information Systems in Healthcare

Foundations of Nursing Research

Advocacy Through Healthcare Policy

Role of the Nurse Leader in Population Health

Students will be required to complete approximately 30 credit hours of core nursing coursework in order to earn their Bachelor of Science in Nursing.

Practicum/Clinical Experience

Many online RN to BSN programs will require students to complete a practicum or clinical experience. These culminating elements of the program give students the opportunity to apply what they’ve learned to a real-world scenario. In many cases, this component of the program can be completed at the registered nurse’s current workplace or at a healthcare facility in his or her local area.
