The University of Hawaii – Manoa offers more than 80 degree programs for undergrads to help them each Bachelor of Science and other degrees. A Bachelor of Environmental Design is available for those who want to look at the ways in which new construction can affect the environment. This program includes some architecture classes. Zoology majors can earn a Bachelor of Arts or a Bachelor of Science. Both programs include internship opportunities with leading zoos and animal centers in Manoa and on other Hawaiian islands. Students have the option of doing internships in the summer or as they take classes during a standard semester.
One of the more unique programs is in tropical agriculture and the environment. It looks at how professionals manage agriculture centers and what they do to reduce their impact on the environment. The journalism program gives students the chance to hone their writing skills as they take courses on writing for different forms of media. Most of the majors in this program will work for the campus’s newspaper or literary journal. The University of Hawaii – Manoa offers one of the state’s only undergraduate programs in kinesiology. It prepares students for working with patients as they undergo physical therapy. Most majors will do internships with clinics in Manoa too.
The business administration program at the graduate level helps students earn an MBA. They will take classes on human resources management and other areas of management as well as economics and business law. In the early childhood education program, students can improve the way they work with young children. This program requires that students have a teaching license but will accept those who have licenses from outside of Hawaii. The University of Hawaii – Manoa also offers a graduate program in French that allows students to take classes on the culture and language of France. Those students can also study overseas in Paris and other parts of France.

The University of Hawaii – Manoa is a public university that serves as the main campus in the University of Hawaii – Manoa System. When Hawaii was still a territory, an act of legislature called for the establishment of a college in the area. Though passed in 1907, the then College of Manoa did not move to the city until 1912. It because a university in 1920 and adopted the name of the University of Hawaii. Though this is still the university’s official name, it also goes by UH and UH Manoa.
UH Manoa now consists of 19 different colleges and schools that oversee various departments. The Honors Program is open to students who demonstrate strong academic skills and requires that they maintain a grade point average of at least 3.20 to remain in the program. U.S. News and World Report ranks UH Manoa for having some of the country’s top majors in education, library science, and social work but also ranks it as the 157th best American university. UH, which has an enrollment of more than 17,000 students, also ranks as one of the world’s best colleges, according to ARWU and Washington Monthly.
University of Hawaii – Manoa Accreditation Details
UH Manoa has regional accreditation, which is why students can use college credits there that they earned elsewhere. That accreditation is also what lets students get financial aid after they complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). It comes from the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC). This Hawaiian university also has accreditation for the programs available in dietetics, nursing, law, psychology, dental hygiene and music along with a few others.
University of Hawaii – Manoa Application Requirements
The high school requirements for incoming freshmen at UH Manoa include a transcript that shows the student took five units of electives, three units of math, social studies and science, four units of English and five other units of courses designed for future college students. Students must have a cumulative grade point average of 2.8 or higher and rank in the top 40% of their classes. The university also requires a score of 1100/22 on the SAT/ACT. To apply, they need to submit the UH application, pay a $70 fee and make sure that the Office of Admissions receives their transcripts and test scores. UH Manoa accepts around 85% of the undergrads who apply annually.
Graduate students need to pay the same application fee, but they will submit a different application directly to the university’s graduate school. UH Manoa asks for transcripts from the students and for a GRE score. They may need to provide forms to show that they are residents of Hawaii to qualify for the in-state tuition rate. This form is available online as a PDF that students can print out at home or school. A small number of graduate programs have additional requirements such as a resume, writing sample or letters of recommendation too.
Tuition and Financial Aid
Students can look at the UH Manoa tuition rates to determine their costs each year. Undergrads pay $11,304 each year and fees of $882 as full-time students. Nonresident undergrads pay $16,668 per semester. The cost for part-time undergrads is between $907 and $1,825 per credit hour. Graduate students pay $1,114 per credit hour as a resident of Hawaii and $2,090 per credit hour as a nonresident. The cost of housing for on-campus students is $4,968 per year and includes both a meal plan and a room in a campus residence hall.
Financial aid is available from UH Manoa for most of its students. Graduate students with a minimum GPA of 3.0 can apply for an assistantship position. They work between 10 and 20 hours a week and must take six credits of classes each semester. The university offers an online application that students can use to apply. New Warrior scholarships go to incoming freshmen and include some programs designed for students on the Manoa campus and others that are available for students enrolled in any branch of the HU system. Financial aid packages also help students get grants and loans and work for the university through the work-study program.
