About Coppin State University
Coppin State University originated in 1900 when the Baltimore City School Board voted to start a one-year postsecondary teacher training course at the Colored High School. In 1902, it became a two-year Normal Department for education associate degrees. In 1909, it earned independence as the Normal School. In 1926, it was renamed in honor of African-American pioneer Fanny Jackson Coppin. In 1938, the Maryland Legislature authorized its first four-year Bachelor of Science degree. Twelve years later, it was renamed the Coppin State Teachers College. In 1952, Coppin purchased its current West North Avenue site. After Brown v. Board of Education, Coppin State was opened to all races in 1954. In 1967, the Bachelor of Arts in English became its first non-teaching degree. In 1988, President Calvin Burnett joined Coppin to the University System of Maryland. On April 13, 2004, the Coppin State University name was finally adopted.

On June 21, 2018, Coppin State University was notified by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE) Board of Trustees that the Level V accreditation was satisfactorily extended through the next 2025-26 evaluation under President Mickey Burnim, who earned the Governor’s Citation for Service. Located 112 miles northeast via Interstate 95 in Philly, this splendid six-state Mid-Atlantic Region accreditor is recognized by the U.S. Department of Education and Maryland Higher Education Commission (MHEC). Coppin State University Application Requirements
Starting at Coppin State University is classified as “moderately difficult” by Peterson’s because 2,016 of the 3,767 Fall 2018 applicants were chosen for 54 percent acceptance. First-year Eagles must fulfill 16 college-prep secondary credits for a diploma or the GED equivalent. The Summer Academic Success Academy only has 150 spots for graduating high school seniors. Freshmen achieve an average cumulative GPA of 2.62. Mid-range admitted ACT scores are 15-18. The middle 50th percentile have SAT scores of 380-450 for reading and 380-460 for math. Undergrads can transfer up to 70 community college or 90 senior university credits graded C and better. Overall transfer GPAs above 2.0 are required. International learners on F-1 visas need at least 500 TOEFL pBT or 6.0 IELTS scores. The School of Graduate Studies prefers four-year bachelor’s completion with a 3.0 or greater GPA. Nursing degrees require finishing a CCNE- or ACEN-accredited baccalaureate for current RN licensure. Master of Education cohorts must be certified practicing teachers in PreK-12 classrooms.
Coppin State University has rolling undergrad admission until May 1st for Fall or December 15th for Spring. Non-U.S. residents must file before May 15th or October 15th.
