Degree Programs at Hunter College

Hunter College appears in our ranking of 50 Great Affordable Colleges for Art and Music.

Hunter College in New York offers both traditional and pre-professional programs for undergrads from the state and other states. The pre-professional programs offer the training and education that students need to apply to and enroll in a professional graduate program or school. Some of the pre-professional programs include a pre-law program for law school candidates and a pre-social work program for those who want to earn a Master of Social Work (MSW). The college also offers a pre-nursing program for students who do not meet the prerequisites for its full nursing program.

The college offers nearly 80 majors for undergrads, including some designed for future graduate students and others for students who want to work in various fields. Its Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) allows students to meet some of the licensing requirements for social workers and lets them earn a separate certificate in social administration. The college’s urban studies program focuses on the different cultures found in one urban area and the social impact that those groups have on the city. Students in the urban planning program will take courses on some of those cultures as they learn how to design new cities and make changes to existing cities. Other undergrad programs include majors in accounting, Chinese, education, philosophy, Latin and physical therapy.

Hunter College also offers more than 60 majors for graduate students. It has two Master of Science in Education (MSED) programs in childhood literacy and childhood education that include some fieldwork. The college expects students to work with children in real schools to see how their skills translate into the field. Master of Fine Arts (MFA) programs let students pick majors in fields that include integrated media arts, dance and creative writing. Students learn how to express their thoughts and opinions in different ways through these programs. Graduate students can also earn degrees in fields such as math, nutrition, Italian, urban planning and social research through Hunter College.

About Hunter College

Hunter College is part of the City University of New York system, which is why it sometimes uses the name CUNY Hunter College. Long before becoming part of that system, it existed as an independent college. Established in 1870 as the Female Normal and High School, it served as one of the only schools in New York designed specifically for women. As it transitioned to a college, it adopted the name of the Normal College of the City of New York. It accepted women from all backgrounds and did not discriminate based on religion or skin color. The college would later choose the name Hunter College to pay respect to its original founder, Thomas Hunter.

The college offers some of the state’s top education programs because those programs allow students to work in schools operated by the college. Though those schools are now on separate campuses, students can use the subway to reach them. During the 1950s, Hunter changed its enrollment policies and allowed men to take classes on its campuses. The college has one campus in Manhattan, which is still its largest campus, and two smaller satellite campuses that oversee its public health and social work programs.

Hunter College Accreditation Details

The main accreditation held by Hunter College comes from the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE). As the college has a review committee that checks on the standards for accreditation, it hasn’t had any issues renewing its regional accreditation. That is why the college can accept transfer credits and why students can transfer Hunter credits to another school. Hunter also has accreditation from other groups, including the Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH) and the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE).

Hunter College Application Requirements

The Hunter College admissions office is open Monday through Friday to help students who have questions about the application process. As the college is part of the CUNY system, undergrads must meet the CUNY admissions requirements and the college’s own requirements. Students typically score 28 on the ACT or 1300 on the SAT, though the college accepts students with lower scores. Undergrads need to submit the CUNY application and select Hunter as the college they want to attend. They will pay an application fee and submit either a high school transcript or a GED score. The college asks for an ACT or SAT score and a supplemental essay, which is on the application.

Graduate students need to submit their applications by the deadline established by each program. This deadline is usually around the middle of February through the end of March. All programs ask for a completed application packet, though other requirements vary across programs. Students may need to provide two to three letters of recommendation from professional and academic references, a GRE score and a statement of purpose of 500 words. Hunter College requires that grad students have a bachelor’s degree too. Most programs recommend that students have a cumulative undergrad GPA of 3.0 or the same GPA in all their major classes too.

Tuition and Financial Aid

New York residents pay $230 per credit hour as a part-time student or $6,730 per year as an undergrad. The college adds a nonresident fee to its tuition that leads to nonresidents paying $600 per credit hour or $18,000 per year to earn a bachelor’s degree from Hunter College. All undergrads pay fees of $132 to $225 per semester based on whether they enroll part-time or full-time. Graduate students pay $440 to $580 per credit hour and fees that bring their costs to $5,225 to $6,895 per semester.

Hunter College allows students to get traditional types of financial aid through the FAFSA, including the subsidized loans that go to undergrads and the unsubsidized loans that go to graduate students. The federal government offers other special loans programs such as PLUS loans for graduate students and supplemental loans for the parents of undergrads. Students who use the FAFSA may find that they can join the Federal Work-Study program too. College scholarships are available for those who have more need, those who demonstrate more merit and students who declare a major in a specific field. Students can only get scholarships if they complete the FAFSA. Hunter College includes scholarships in the financial aid letters that it sends out to students every year.
