About Wesleyan College

Wesleyan College originated on December 23, 1836, when the Legislature chartered the Georgia Female College as the world’s first degree-granting institution for women. In January 1839, the Methodist Episcopal Church enrolled the inaugural class of 168 bachelor’s students. In 1843, the name was changed to Wesleyan Female College to signify its Christian values. In 1851, Wesleyan students founded one of the earliest sororities called Alpha Delta Pi. In 1897, Wesleyan became a Young Woman’s Christian Association (YWCA) Chapter. Shortened to Wesleyan College in 1917, it earned initial regional accreditation two years later. In 1953, Wesleyan student Neva Jane Langley was crowned Miss America. By 1968, Wesleyan had established its three-story Lucy Lester Willett Memorial Library. In 2004, Wesleyan was added to the National Register of Historic Places. In Fall 2007, Wesleyan invested $12.5 million in building the Munroe Science Center.

Wesleyan College Accreditation Details

On December 8, 2015, the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) Board of Trustees voted favorably to reaffirm the Level III accreditation status at Wesleyan College through the next 2024-25 evaluation under President Vivia Fowler, PhD., who earned Columbia’s James Milton Ariail Society Medallion Award. Located 83 miles up Interstate 75 in Decatur, this superb 11-state Southeast Region accreditor is recognized by the Council on Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) and Georgia Nonpublic Postsecondary Education Commission (GNPEC). Further, the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM) has accredited Wesleyan since September 1, 1937. The Division of Nursing is approved by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) through June 2021 too.

Wesleyan College Application Requirements

Getting into Wesleyan College is classified as “moderately difficult” by Peterson’s because only 426 of the 890 Fall 2018 applicants were triumphant for 48 percent acceptance. First-year, degree-seeking Wolves must exhibit academic promise during diploma or GED completion. Rigorous advanced courses with AP/IB scores of 4 or higher are transferrable. Unconditional admission requires transfers to hold 12+ semester credits and 2.5 or higher GPAs. Non-native English speakers should achieve at least 213 cBT, 550 pBT, or 80 iBT TOEFL scores. Graduate programs mandate a four-year bachelor’s GPA above 3.0. The Executive M.B.A. prefers five or more years of experience. Hybrid M.Ed. students need valid, current K-12 teaching credentials.

Wesleyan College has a November 15th Early Decision deadline for freshmen. Undergrads can apply until April 1st for Fall or November 1st for Spring enrollment.
