About University of North Carolina-Pembroke

Originally named Croatan Normal School, University of North Carolina-Pembroke is the only public university started by Native Americans. In the beginning, the government-funded school primarily trained Native American teachers and taught mostly elementary and high school-level material; however, there have been many changes since its start in 1887. For one, after a few moves, the school finally settled in its current home in Pembroke, North Carolina, in 1909 and officially became part of the University of North Carolina System in 1972. Also, the institution offers almost 60 distinct degree programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Additionally, while still 15% Native American, the approximately 7000-member student body has diversified significantly from its primarily American Indian roots with a current breakdown of 38% Caucasian, 34% African American, 5% Latino, and 2% Asian.

Along with emphasizing the benefits of diversity on campus, faculty also focus on cultivating individual relationships with students, something made possible by the university’s low 16-to-1 student-teacher ratio. Other parts of their mission involve instilling the values of sustainability, community service, and integrity. By holding true to their educational philosophy, the university received a spot on the U.S. News and World Report’s list of Top Public Schools – Regional Universities South.

University of North Carolina-Pembroke Accreditation Details

UNCP first earned accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) in 1951, and this designation was most recently reaffirmed in 2010 after the standard 10-year review cycle. The SACSCOC has developed a set of quality standards for colleges and universities and is responsible for evaluating schools in 11 states in the southeastern region of the United States. These include the categories of transparency, teaching and learning methods, and accountability. The benefits of this certification process are twofold, first assuring students that a degree from the school is worth the time and expense and also indicating to potential employers that graduates are well educated and prepared. Plus, only students attending regionally accredited institutions are eligible for federal financial aid. Additionally, the graduate counseling programs at UNCP are accredited by the Council for the Accreditation of Counseling and Related Education Programs (CACREP). This organization focuses only on specific programs within their field and evaluates them in areas like curriculum, student selection, practicum requirements, and faculty qualifications to ensure that graduates are adequately prepared to work in the profession.
