About Granite State College

Granite State College is relatively young. It was founded in 1972 with a philosophy of education geared toward nontraditional students. The college strove then and strives now to let students achieve the work-study-life balance they need to be most successful. Granite State College crafted its education toward students of all ages, including those who went back to school later in life.

The college also participates with employers, both in the State of New Hampshire and elsewhere, in a continuing education program. The idea is to train people already in the workforce in additional skills they need in an ever-changing world. Many such students also take online classes to earn a degree while receiving their job-based training. This focus on adult learning has earned the college a “Best for Adult Learners” ranking of 13 in the Washington Monthly.

Granite State College Admission Requirements

Prospective students must remember that Granite State College operates on a trimester system, so many of the deadlines and other important dates will be different from any college that uses a semester system. Students have to have either completed high school and earned a diploma or have completed the GED and passed the requisite test. All applicants must have forwarded all applicable transcripts from all institutions attended prior to acceptance at Granite State College. These must be official transcripts sent by each institution. No student-sent transcripts will be accepted. Homeschooled students are allowed to apply, and the curriculum studied must have been approved by the state. In this case, the parents or guardians are considered “the institution” and may send the applicable information to the Admissions Office at Granite State College.

There are certain other eligibility requirements of all students no matter the degree sought. Students should peruse this webpage at the school’s website so that nothing is left to chance.

Graduate students must have earned a bachelor’s degree with a GPA of at least 3.0 from a regionally accredited college or university. Two letters of reference from professional or professorial relationships, not including any family members or friends, are required as is an essay describing the student’s long-term professional and personal goals. The student must also submit a current resume. None of Granite State College’s graduate programs require either the Graduate Record Exam or the Graduate Management Admissions Test.

All international students must submit all documentation in English and take an accredited English proficiency examination prior to acceptance. Should the international student wish to come to Granite State College’s campus for study rather than attend online, proper visas, work permits, if applicable, and other immigration documentation must all be in order. Students should contact the Admissions Office for further information.

Tuition and Financial Aid

Tuition at Granite State College is calculated by credit hour. Undergraduate tuition for New Hampshire residents is $314 per credit hour while out-of-state tuition is $355 per credit hour. Graduate tuition is $558 per credit hour for in-state students and $575 per credit hour for out-of-state students. Other students, such as post-baccalaureate and some part-time students, have other tuition costs that vary by situation. Students requiring further information should contact the bursar.

There are also assorted fees for each trimester, some of which also vary by student situation. Granite State College’s website provides basic information, and the bursar will have more complete information available.

Students wishing to apply for financial aid of any type should begin by filling out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, also known as the FAFSA. Nearly all students must provide tax information for both themselves and their parents or guardians as part of the FAFSA process. Of course, there are scholarships and grants available to students who meet the requisite qualifications for such awards.

Grants may come from the government, such as PELL awards, or from the private sector. Graduate students may qualify for teaching assistant positions, and all students who actually attend classes in person may qualify for work-study. Any student who accepts such a position must maintain satisfactory academic progress of both quality and timeliness to maintain a job. For undergraduates, that requirement is a GPA of 2.0. For graduate students, it is a GPA of 3.0. These, and other, requirements are non-negotiable because they consist of federal law.

Granite State College provides its students with both traditional and nontraditional methods of study so as to meet the eclectic demands of the 21st-century student body.
