About the University of Minnesota Crookston

In 1851, Minnesota Territorial Laws established the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, seven years before Minnesota became a state. In 1895, the legislature approved two experimental research farms as part of the University. One was located in Morris and the other in Crookston. The Great Northern Railway donated over 476 acres to establish what was then known as the Northwest Experiment Station in Crookston. In 1905, the experimental station became the Northwest School of Agriculture and Experiment Station, a residential high school with a focus on agriculture.

In 1963, as the need for college-level technical education grew, the legislature realized that additional programs were necessary that would prepare students for careers in technology. In 1965, they approved the creation of an Agricultural and Technical Institute in Crookston to be located on the same campus as the Northwest School of Agriculture. Initially, the school offered only two-year degrees in agriculture, general studies, and business. The Northwest School of Agriculture closed in 1968 and the name of the school is changed to University of Minnesota Technical College. In 1988, the name was changed to University of Minnesota Crookston and four-year degrees were offered starting in 1993.

Today, there are 1,800 students enrolled at the University of Minnesota Crookston. All students are provided with a laptop and the small campus allows students to work closely with faculty and staff throughout their education. U.S. News & World Report has ranked the school as a “best college” for more than a decade and also ranks the online programs at the school as one of the best in the country.

University of Minnesota Crookston Accreditation Details

The University of Minnesota Crookston is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission.
