Central Michigan University


Since being founded in 1892, Central Michigan University has become a major comprehensive four-year public research institution with the state’s third largest enrollment. With more than 50 locations across America and a Global Campus, CMU is headquartered on 480 park-like acres in the residential suburbs of Mount Pleasant just 150 miles northwest of Detroit. Enrolling over 28,300 students every year, CMU has around 200 academic degrees at the bachelor’s, master’s, specialist, and doctoral level. Central Michigan University Accreditation Details

For the past century, Central Michigan University has been formally approved to confer degrees by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association (NCA), which is one of the six recognized regional accrediting bodies of the CHEA. Many of CMU’s programs have gone a step beyond to receive specialized discipline-specific accreditation too.

Online business degrees are accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB). Education programs offered online have approval from the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE). Other notable accreditations include the Accreditation Board of Engineering and Technology (ABET) and the American Psychological Association (APA).

Central Michigan University Application Requirements

With an acceptance rate of 63 percent, Central Michigan University holds some criteria that must be fulfilled for admissions. Incoming freshmen must have a high school diploma from an accredited educational institution or a GED equivalent. Students should have four years of English, four years of mathematics, four years of physical sciences, four years of social sciences, and at least two years of foreign language. There aren’t grade requirements, but the incoming class has an average cumulative GPA of 3.33 and an average ACT score of 23.

Students wishing to transfer to CMU from another accredited institution will be reviewed based on merit from a holistic approach. Those with less than 24 credits of college coursework will be evaluated on the same criteria as high school graduates. Transfers with at least 60 credits remaining on their bachelor’s degree must carry a minimum overall college GPA of 2.3. It’s important to note that transfer students are also assessed according to involvement beyond the classroom, leadership potential, academic achievement, and good citizenship.

More advanced students looking to enroll in CMU’s graduate programs must have obtained at least a four-year bachelor’s degree or foreign equivalent from an accredited higher learning institution. Graduate students must have a minimum overall GPA of 2.5, but certain schools have higher requirements due to competitiveness. If born outside America, students must provide proof of U.S. citizenship through an immigrant visa or resident alien card. International students must obtain a PBT score of at least 500 on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL).

By the deadline around six to eight weeks before the semester, interested applicants to Central Michigan University must submit an application with:

  • Official high school and/or college transcripts
  • Standardized SAT, ACT, GRE, or GMAT results
  • One to three letters of recommendation
  • Foreign test evaluations if needed
  • A statement of purpose describing future career plans
  • Non-refundable application fee of $45

Tuition and Financial Aid

Online learners at Central Michigan University are charged a base tuition rate per semester hour for taking their Global Campus courses. Undergraduate students at the bachelor’s level can expect to pay $387 per credit hour, except those in the B.S. in Information Technology where tuition is $437. Veterans receive a discount on undergraduate courses to pay $310 per credit hour. Standard graduate courses will cost $510 per credit hour or $305 for graduate military veterans. Students pursuing the MBA online will need to afford a higher tuition rate of $600 per credit hour.

To help cover these prices, Central Michigan automatically considers qualifying students for several financial aid options when a FAFSA form is properly filed. Eligible students can borrow money from the federal government through Perkins, Direct, and PLUS loans. Tuition help can be gifted to financially students with the Federal Pell Grant, TEACH Grant, or FSEOG Grant. There are also numerous university scholarships that CMU Online students can utilize, such as the Blanche Connell Scholarship, Global Campus Endowed Scholarship, and U.S. Armed Forces Award. The Alumni Legacy Program also offers up to $12,000 every year for non-Michigan residents whose parents graduated from Central Michigan.

Ideal for certified teachers who wish to energize and motivate their peers for professional development, the M.A. in Teacher Leadership program includes 30 credit hours completed fully online with a culminating internship experience. Applicants must have three years of experience working in education before taking the program’s courses in curriculum development, instructional multimedia, educational administration, teacher leadership, and educational measurement.
