This is available as a professional development track for current teachers and as a licensure track for those who need a teaching license and want to teach math at a specific level.

About Indiana University East

The largest public university system in Indiana is Indiana University, which operates regional campuses across the state such as Indiana University East. Also called IU East, this campus sits in the town of Richmond. Located right on the border between Ohio and Indiana, the campus covers more than 170 acres. Though many of its students come from one of these two states, the university welcomes students from other states and countries. There are more than 60 programs and options for students at the undergrad and graduate levels.

Prior to becoming IU East, the university served as an extension campus maintained by Earlham College. That college later allowed other schools to offer classes on the campus. Locals called for the state to establish a new community college in the area that would operate on its own. The state agreed to the idea and eventually took over the campus and added it to the Indiana University system. More than 3,000 students now attend IU East. Many of those students transfer to other branches of the system later, but the university also has a large number of adult learners and nontraditional students enrolled.

Indiana University East Accreditation Details

The North Central Association of Colleges and Schools (NCACS) granted IU East regional accreditation and continues to renew the university’s accreditation every 10 years. NCACS accreditation allows students who cannot afford college to get financial aid and also allows students to transfer to and from this Indiana University. IU East has accreditation from other agencies as well, including the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) and the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE).

Indiana University East Application Requirements

IU East has different application requirements for undergrads vs. graduate students. Undergrads must complete some type of college prep curriculum as part of their high school studies. They can complete the Indiana Core 40 or the equivalent of that program in their home states. This includes 40 units of core classes, including English, math, science, social science, and foreign language classes. The university expects students to take electives in high school too. Undergrads should also rank among the top 50% of their high school classes. These students should complete the application and then send their transcripts and official test scores to the university. IU East will also accept students who completed a homeschool program or have a GED.

Graduate students will also submit their transcripts and the online application. Depending on the program they enroll in though, they may need to meet other requirements. The university’s nursing program only accepts students who have a valid nursing license. All programs require that students have a bachelor’s degree too. IU East may ask for a writing sample or a goals statement that provides the university with a list of the student’s goals. Some programs will also require a resume too. Students may need to meet with a counselor or representative for an interview also.

Tuition and Financial Aid

As a public university, IU East offers a lower tuition rate to Indiana residents. Indiana undergrads pay just $224 per credit hour, while residents of other states pay $626 per credit hour. This includes only the university’s tuition and not the other fees that it charges. The rate for graduate students starts at $293 per credit hour for residents and rises to $692 per credit hour for nonresidents. Some of its graduate programs charge higher rates. The university also offers a lower rate for grad students and undergrads enrolled in a distance education program.

When a student applying to IU East also completes the FAFSA and uses the proper school code, the university will design a financial aid package around the specific needs of that student. Financial aid packages for undergrads may give them the chance to work part-time on the campus and get grants and loans. Graduate students can use federal funds in the form of an unsubsidized student loan. There are other loan programs designed for graduate students who need more financial support and the parents of any enrolled college student. Students enrolled in any of the degree programs offered by Indiana University East qualify for some type of financial aid.
