The University of Maryland Baltimore County offers degrees from three colleges and four schools. The colleges that offer degree programs are the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, College of Engineering and Information Technology, and the College of Natural and Mathematical Sciences. The schools that offer degree programs are The Erickson School, the Graduate School, the School of Public Policy, and the School of Social Work. There are 61 majors, 70 minors, and 36 certificate programs at the undergraduate level and 38 master’s, 25 doctoral, and 29 graduate certificate programs through the Graduate School.
In addition to programs offered at the main campus, there are the Division of Professional Studies and The Universities at Shady Grove offering several degrees or certificates. Online master’s and certificate programs include teaching English to speakers of other languages, emergency health services, information systems, instructional systems development – training systems, and distance education. As representative examples of the diverse programs available at the University of Maryland County’s main campus, a program from each level of education is highlighted.
According to US News & World Report, one of the most popular majors for graduates is computer science. The ABET-accredited program provides diverse applications of computer science in currently popular and lucrative fields such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, data science, graphics and game design, quantum computing, and forensic analysis. These programs highlight problem solving and logic within the theory, application, and analysis within the architecture of computer-based work. In addition to completing the general education requirements, students are also required to 11 computer science courses and five computer science electives resulting in an overall program of 77 credits.
A Master of Arts in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) has an on-campus and online option for completion.There are four options for an M.A. in TESOL:
- MA in TESOL (36 credits)
- MA in TESOL with thesis (39 credits)
- MA in TESOL with P-12 certification (42 credits)
- MA in TESOL with thesis and P-12 certification (52 credits)
These programs develop the student to be proficient and experienced teachers of the English language. The program develops both theory and application producing well-rounded teachers and educators.
The Ph.D. in Chemistry provides students with the educational and research applications based experience to excel in government, industry, or the academic setting after completion of the program. Offering disciplines of analytical, biochemical, organic, inorganic, and physical chemistry, the program provides diverse yet interconnected disciplines to provide the students with a well-rounded and in-depth education. In general, eight courses are required with a passing grade and an overall GPA of 3.0 or better is required for graduation. Milestones within the program include a literature review of the general topic in which the student is studying, an advancement to doctoral candidate via defense of the student’s planned doctoral research, an independent proposal which is a written proposal not relating to the student’s research, and public defense of the student’s body of work through the Ph.D. program. Joint programs are offered for biochemistry, molecular and cell biology, and marine-estuarine environmental science.

University of Maryland Application Requirements
The University of Maryland Baltimore County has a student profile for first-year students with an average GPA of 3.89 on a 4.0 scale and an average SAT score of 1275. The requirements for applying are:
- Graduation or equivalent from a high school with four years of English, four years of mathematics, three years of social science or history, three years of science, and two years of a language other than English.
- Submission of application and the application fee.
- Submission of official transcripts from high school.
- Submission of official SAT or ACT test scores.
- Letters of recommendation.
- An audition, if necessary, for a student’s program of interest.
Transfer students require all the same as first-year students as well as any official transcripts from any other colleges that were attended. International students that are non-native English speakers must submit official English proficiency test results. Graduate programs differ by program but generally require letters of recommendation, submission of all degrees awarded, and graduate-level standardized tests. Specifics to the program of interest should be cross-checked with the department’s website.
Tuition and Financial Aid
According to the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), in-state and out-of-state tuitions are $12,028 and $27,662 respectively along with an estimated books and supplies cost of $1,600. If living on campus, one can expect costs to be approximately $29,000 for in-state students and $44,664 for out-of-state students if residing on campus.
All financial aid starts with filing a free application for federal student aid (FASFA). According to the NCES, 90 percent of students receive some form of financial aid. Grants and scholarships do not need to be repaid and as with the Pell Grant, many are need-based. In accord with the University of Maryland Baltimore County being an honors university, there are also merit-based awards. In addition to federal and private grants and scholarships, student loans can be obtained both from the federal government and/or a private banking institute to make attending the University of Maryland Baltimore County more affordable.
