About Indiana University South Bend

Indiana University South Bend is a public university in South Bend, Indiana. In 1922, Indiana University established an extension branch of the Bloomington campus that offered a small number of classes in South Bend. It expanded the number of classes available during the Great Depression to meet the needs of the many unemployed students in the city. Classes met in rooms on the Central High School campus until the university acquired land in 1961 and became working on a new campus. This campus opened later in the 1960s as Indiana University South Bend. It added more buildings up through the 2010s and spent more than $20 million to renovate the building used for its liberal arts and education programs.

Also called both IUSB and IU South Bend, the university has a small campus on the outskirts of the city that is just a short drive from downtown South Bend and the University of Notre Dame. Attached to the campus is a small neighborhood of houses that the university rents to students. Those houses put them within walking distance of their classes. IUSB also opened the Indiana University South Bend Elkhart Center in 2007, which offers more than 20,000 square feet of space for students from the Elkhart area.
