The University of Connecticut-Waterbury offers a number of undergraduate and graduate degrees. These include degrees in the arts, the fine arts, music, science, engineering, applied science and general studies. It’s an excellent public school that the US News and World Report ranks 64th in its National Universities category and 37th in its Best Colleges for Veterans category.

The school boasts quite a few popular majors. These include Communication and Rhetoric, Biology and Biological Sciences, Nursing, Economics, Psychology and Business.

Students who are interested in taking their studies online will find that the University of Connecticut-Waterbury has quite a bit to offer. It has numerous online courses. It also has certificate programs and master’s degree programs that it offers online. These include Educational Technology, Digital Media and Design and Puppet Arts.

Campus life at the University of Connecticut-Waterbury is pretty cozy. The university is located in Waterbury, Connecticut, which is about 33 miles from Hartford. Due to the city’s involvement in the brassware industry, it is affectionately called “The Brass City” by residents. It is in the midst of this mid-sized town that the University of Connecticut-Waterbury sits.

The university offers students a number of amenities that are intended to allow students to acclimate to university life. Students can make new friends in the Student Lounge. There are couches to sit on, video games to play and a TV to watch. Students who want to get involved in club life or student government can learn more about these organizations in the Student Lounge, too.

Additionally, UConn-Waterbury provides a center for career development to help students connect with potential employers. This service also helps students prepare job application materials, like resumes, and allows students to practice their interview skills. The Office of Student Affairs is available when students need academic counseling, information about final exams, to change their major and information about scholarships.

Finally, UConn-Waterbury makes it easy for students to get involved in campus life by providing students with the One Card. This card functions as a student ID card and a bank card to pay for movies, photocopying and other services. It also allows students to access their residence halls, athletic events and recreation facilities. Finally, it allows students to get discounts where those are offered to One Card holders.

UConn-Waterbury is one of the regional campuses of the University of Connecticut. About 1,000 students study on this campus.

University of Connecticut-Waterbury Application Requirements

Filling out the application for the University of Connecticut-Waterbury is pretty straight forward. The school asks Freshman to submit the following:

  • Fill out either a Coalition Application or a Common Application for University of Connecticut-Waterbury
  • Submit a $80 application fee (non-refundable)
  • An essay
  • Test scores: ACT or SAT
  • High school transcripts or GED
  • Immigration status
  • Two letters of recommendation (optional)

First year students must also meet the school’s admissions requirements. Before students apply, they should check their high school transcripts to ensure that they have taken all of the required classes. Students who were in the military can transfer military credits.

The school makes similar requests of transfer students. Aside from the information in the list above, transfer students must also submit the transcripts from any colleges or universities they attended before applying to UConn-Waterbury.

International students, including those who have transferred from another college, must meet the school’s admissions requirements. They should have completed coursework that would be equivalent to the coursework that US students take in grades nine through 12. It’s also important that the students have taken English if it was offered, as well as courses in the physical sciences, mathematics and social sciences.

The university has some additional requirements for students entering the fine arts. These supplemental materials can include a portfolio, an audition or an interview and essay.

Finally, UConn-Waterbury also has graduate studies. Students who wish to apply to the university at this level are required to submit the following:

  • The school application
  • An application fee of $75
  • Records of their bachelor’s degree
  • School transcripts, which include the student’s cumulative GPA (3.0 on a 4.0 scale)
  • A statement of purpose
  • Test scores: GMAT or GRE
  • Connecticut residency or New English Regional Student Program information
  • Dual degree information
  • Evidence of English proficiency and information about Visa sponsorship for international students

Tuition and Financial Aid

UConn-Waterbury has different tuition prices for residents and non-residents. The tuition rate may be reduced if the student is a resident or a member of the New England Regional Student Program.

Generally speaking, in-state tuition for the University of Connecticut-Waterbury is just over $14,000 per year (as of this writing). Out-of-state students pay just over $37,000 per year in tuition.

The university calculates that students will spend another $16,000 or so on university and student fees, housing and meal plans. The number for the latter will vary slightly if the student doesn’t live on campus. Students will pay an additional $3,000 or so for health insurance.

Students who are New England residents, but not Connecticut residents will pay almost $23,000 per year to attend UConn-Waterbury. All additional costs, like housing, are about the same.

The university does offer financial aid. About 64% of students get some form of aid, whether it be grants or scholarships. Students who wish to qualify for financial aid need to fill out the FAFSA. The school offers a sampling of scholarships, including the Leadership Scholarship, the Nutmeg Scholarship, the STEM Scholarship and the UConn Award to name but a few. Some of these scholarships, like the Nutmeg Scholarships, are full scholarships.

Finally, there is a commitment from the state of Connecticut that ensures students whose household income is less than $50,000 a year can afford college. For these students, tuition is covered.
