About University of Houston Victoria

The University of Houston is one of the largest school systems in Texas. It operates a number of smaller and larger regional campuses in cities across the state. The campus it has in Victoria is the University of Houston Victoria. Also called UHV, this campus opened in the early 1960s after a group of locals called for the state to build a new community college in Victoria. Classes started in 1973 at the school, which was then the University of Houston Victoria Center. It became UHV in the early 1980s after the state agreed to let it operate as a full university. UHV is only the fourth campus established by the University of Houston.

U.S. News and World Report refers to UHV as a Tier 2 university because of the opportunities it offers for students. The university is home to three separate schools that are each responsible for maintaining different departments. Though UHV started out as a small regional division of a larger university, it now has a large population of its own. The University of Houston Victoria has an enrollment of more than 4,000 students.

University of Houston Victoria Accreditation Details

The Commission on Colleges granted UHV regional accreditation through its Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS). Regional accreditation allows students at the undergrad and post-graduate levels to apply for financial aid if they need it and get some funding for the school year. It also allows students who want to transfer credits both bring those credits to the university and take their credits with them. UHV also has accreditation for its business, counseling and nursing programs.

University of Houston Victoria Application Requirements

UHV recommends that prospective undergrads use the Apply Texas website when applying for the next term and that they apply as early as possible in the year. During the busy season, the university receives a large number of applications and can take up to a month or more to process and send out decision letters. Those who apply earlier in the year can get a decision letter in just a few weeks.

The university asks that students meet several different requirements such as being within the top 50% of their high school classes, scoring 18 on the ACT or 940 on the SAT or having a GPA of 2.0 or higher. As long as an applicant meets at least two of these requirements, he or she will get an acceptance letter. Undergrads must use the Apply Texas website to submit an application and pay a $25 fee before sending their transcripts and test scores to UHV. Those who are under the age of 22 must supply their immunization records also.

Graduate students typically pay a $25 application fee and submit their applications before providing UHV with their official transcripts. The university also asks for immunization records for students taking classes on its Victoria campus. Some of its programs will ask for other types of information, which might include a resume, writing sample, goals statement or essay and references and/or letters of recommendation.

Tuition and Financial Aid

UHV offers some of the most affordable rates for college students in Texas today. Texas residents pay just $295 per credit hour, which includes both university fees and its base tuition rate. Undergrads who do not live full-time in Texas pay a rate of around $710 per credit hour. The university offers lower rates for Texas residents who want to take graduate school classes too. Those students pay $436 per credit hour, while nonresident graduate students pay $851 per credit hour.

The financial aid that the university offers includes a guarantee program that awards students $1,000 that they can put towards their living expenses. This program is only open to students who live in a campus residence hall. Though UHV awards more than $30 million in aid every year, that aid only goes to those who complete the FAFSA. It has a priority deadline of March 15 for students who need aid for the fall semester. The University of Houston Victoria website has information on all its degree programs and the financial aid packages that it designs for all its students.
