About The College of New Jersey

The College of New Jersey is a public college also known as TCNJ. Based out of Ewing, New Jersey, it was one of the first normal schools established in the country. It opened in 1855 and served as the New Jersey State Normal School in Trenton before moving to its current location in the late 1920s. The college would also serve as the New Jersey State Teachers College at Trenton, Trenton State College and The College of Ne Jersey before adopting the TCNJ name.

As a liberal arts college, TCNJ offers programs that help students develop critical thinking and decision making skills as well as skills relating to their majors. The more than 50 programs designed for undergrads are available from seven different schools that include the School of Engineering and the School of Business. Seven-year programs are available for students who want to study medicine and allows them to transfer to a full university for their later studies. U.S. News and World Report ranks TCNJ as the fourth best college in the northern region of the United States.

The College of New Jersey Accreditation Details

TCNJ has accreditation for its bachelor and graduate degree programs in education from the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE). It also holds accreditation for its engineering, business, and speech and language pathology programs. The Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE) awarded regional accreditation to TCNJ too, which is why the college can accept credits from students who attended other colleges and award students the financial aid that they need.

The College of New Jersey Application Requirements

The college accepts nearly half of the undergraduate applications that it receives annually. More than 12,000 undergrads apply every year via the Common Application, which allows them to use their personal information to apply to TCNJ and other schools. Students must either pay the college’s $75 application fee online or check a box on the application and send a check or money order to cover that fee. TCNJ can provide students with a waiver if they cannot afford the cost. Students will also write an essay on the application and submit their high school and/or college transcripts and a test score. The college allows students to submit an activity resume and up to three letters of recommendation.

Most of the college’s graduate programs have prerequisite courses that students should take ahead of time. MBA students will need to take at least one finance class and a course on data analytics. They can submit transcripts to show that they took the necessary classes. The basic requirements for graduate students include the college’s application and application fee, one letter of recommendation and an essay. Most programs ask for a GRE score or a score from a similar test, though incoming students with a high grade point average can apply and receive a waiver that allows them to apply without providing a test score. TCNJ may also ask that students have a bachelor’s degree and two years of experience in the same fields they want to study.

TCNJ offers a discount for students who live in nearby counties in Pennsylvania that allows them to qualify for the college’s resident tuition rate at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.

Students who use the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) can get financial aid. The college has programs designed for both nonresidents and residents such as Raise Me, which awards scholarships to incoming students who live in New Jersey.
