The Georgia Institute of Technology serves as the main technical institute in Georgia. Though students may assume that the school only offers technology programs, it offers degree programs in many other fields. Students can study business and earn a degree with a minor in business administration, computing and business, technology and business, international business, language and culture or computing and business. A computer science major allows students to pick from minors that include computing and media, robotics and scientific and engineering computing. Some of the other majors for undergrads at the Georgia Institute of Technology include aerospace engineering, music technology, economics, applied language and cultural studies, international affairs, and biochemistry.

Graduate students can choose from one of six fields of study at the Georgia Institute of Technology and earn degrees in areas relating to those fields. Those with an interest in science can major in biology, chemistry, biomedical engineering, math, physic, psychology or statistics. A small number of liberal arts programs are available such as a Master of Science in Cybersecurity, which students can earn online or on the Georgia campus. The institute also offers programs in planning and engineering, including architecture, music technology, urban design, real estate development, applied systems engineering, nuclear engineering, and mechanical engineering.

Nearly 60 degree programs are available for doctoral students too. These students can begin a program, but they will need to take a comprehensive exam halfway through the program. Passing this exam lets them become a doctoral candidate and begin work on a dissertation. Psychology majors can choose from areas that include cognitive aging, cognition and brain science, quantitative, engineering or industrial and organizational psychology. The nuclear engineering program has a general focus and tracks in medical physics and nuclear enterprise management. Some of the other doctoral programs at the Georgia Institute of Technology include industrial engineering, city and regional planning, management, machine learning, robotics, digital media and history and sociology of technology and science.

About the Georgia Institute of Technology

The Georgia Institute of Technology is one of the largest schools in the University of Georgia system. It is a public university known for its research programs. Often called Georgia Tech, it has a campus in Atlanta that serves as the flagship branch of the institute. It also has a smaller campus in Savannah and four international campuses in countries such as France and China. Founded in 1885 as the Georgia School of Technology, it was one of the first tech schools in the country. The original school offered training to the agricultural workers of the south to provide them with the skills needed to work as the industry of the region changed. During the modern years, the institute grew from a campus with just two buildings to one of the largest campuses in the state.

Known for its tech programs, Georgia Tech is home to some of the best general engineering, biomedical engineering, aerospace engineering, materials engineering, and electrical engineering programs in the nation, according to U.S. News and World Report. The same publication also ranks the school as the 35th best in the US and the 69th best in the world. It also saw its School of Business climb the list to now rank within the top 30 of all American business schools. Georgia Institute of Technology Accreditation Details

The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) and its Commission on Colleges awarded regional accreditation to Georgia Tech. This is what gives students the right to seek financial aid from the government and to transfer credits they earned at this campus to another school. They can also transfer past credits to Georgia Tech because of this accreditation. The engineering, computer science, technology, psychology, planning, business, design, and art programs at the institute all have accreditation too.

Georgia Institute of Technology Application Requirements

The institute accepts 37% of the applications it receives from Georgia residents and 19% of the applications it gets from students from other states every year. Students typically have a GPA of 3.5 or higher and an ACT score of at least 31. approximately 97% of Georgia Tech students return after their freshmen years. The school makes a decision and notifies students on January 12 when it receives their applications by the early action deadline of October 15. Those who wait until the regular deadline of January 1 will receive a decision on March 9. There is an application fee of $75 due when the student completes the application. Undergrads will also need to submit all their transcripts and an official test score.

Georgia Tech is even more selective when it comes to graduate students. Those students will pay a similar application fee and submit an application, which requires that they list the schools they attended, some of the classes they took and any professional experiences they have that relates to their fields of study. A test score, letters of recommendation and personal essays are other requirements for graduate students. Some Georgia Tech programs also ask that students complete interviews with faculty members too.

Tuition and Financial Aid

Georgia Tech charges undergrads $28,368 per year if they are residents of the state and live on campus. Students who live with their families can save more than $11,000 because that is what the school charges for room and board. The cost for nonresident undergrads comes to nearly $50,000 a year between fees, tuition, and room and board. Graduate tuition varies between programs but comes to $12,600 a year for Georgia residents and $33,600 a year for nonresidents.

Though the cost of attendance is high, Georgia Tech allows students to use four different types of financial aid, including institutional, federal and private aid. Those who complete the FAFSA can get government aid from Georgia and the federal government, including Pell grants and the Zell Miller Scholarship. The G. Wayne Clough Georgia Tech Promise Program grants funding to students from families who make $33,000 or less a year. Other scholarships provide undergrads with several hundred dollars or more every year. Renewable scholarships allow students to receive the same amount of funds each year. More than 90% of students enrolled in degree programs at the Georgia Institute of Technology receive financial aid.
