At Kentucky Christian University, students can choose from programs with a focus on religion or programs that ask them to take some religion classes. The dual enrollment program offered by the university is for high school students who want to take classes at the college level. It includes funding that covers the cost of their tuition, though students may need to pay out of their pockets for books and other supplies. They can use their credits at the high school level and also transfer those credits to other schools.

Though dual enrollment students do not need to declare their majors, traditional students do. Kentucky Christian University offers 11 majors for undergrads that include a university studies major and a social work major. In the history program, students also take pre-law classes and go through training that will help them in law school. The teacher education program includes concentrations in primary, middle school and secondary social studies. Students can choose from concentrations in accounting, management, sport management and music business in the university’s business administration program. Some of the concentrations available in the bible and ministry program include small group ministry, camp management, preaching ministry and youth and family ministry.

Five graduate programs are available for students at Kentucky Christian University too. The university’s School of Bible and Ministry offers programs in religion, Christian leadership, and biblical studies. A Master of Arts in Education prepares students for working as teachers and leaders. There is also a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) program that is only available online. It rotates the courses offered each semester and allows students to start in the fall or spring. Most of the university’s graduate programs are available for students who cannot take traditional classes.

About Kentucky Christian University

Kentucky Christian University is a private university affiliated with the Christian Church. Established in 1919, it originally served as a normal school that offered classes for three different types of students. In addition to those who enrolled in the academic programs for teachers, students could also take high school classes there to finish their diplomas and take junior college classes. Just a few years after opening, the college changed its curriculum to focus more on the training that pastors and other religious leaders needed. This led to the college becoming Kentucky Christian University and adopting the nickname KCU.

The university now has a deep commitment to the religious and spiritual needs of its student body. Undergrads must take a minimum of 12 credits of religious studies courses, and the university encourages dual enrollment students to take the same classes. Those who live on-campus will also need to attend church services twice each week. KCU has a reputation for being one of the state’s most affordable private colleges. Students can take part-time classes for a low rate or enroll full-time and pay a block rate each semester. There are also housing options for students that divide them based on their genders. Around 500 students in total attend Kentucky Christian University every year.

Kentucky Christian University Accreditation Details

KCU obtained specialty accreditation for its nursing and social work programs through both the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) and the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). The regional accreditation held by the university gives any student who has college credits the right to transfer their work to the university and allows students full access to the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), which is how they get financial aid. That accreditation comes from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS).

Kentucky Christian University Application Requirements

The KCU application for undergrads is available online or as a paper application. Those who use the paper version can download a copy from the site and send it to the admissions office, using the address listed on the application. KCU asks for high school transcripts from those still in school and college transcripts from transfer students. Any student who applies before finishing high school will need to submit a final transcript after they graduate. KCU requires a standardized test score and has a minimum requirement of 18 on the ACT or 1270 on the SAT. The Christian character reference form is available online too. Students need to print out copies and submit at least two reference forms.

Graduate students applying to the KCU MSN program will use the NursingCAS application. They need a minimum college grade point average of 3.0 and a valid nursing license from an American state. The application asks students to upload a resume, writing sample and three references. Only one of those references can include a former professor. The remaining references must be familiar with the student’s professional work. KCU has a priority application deadline of March first and a final application deadline of May first. The other graduate programs available from the university have similar application requirements and deadlines.

Tuition and Financial Aid

The average cost of attending KCU is $19,996 per year for full-time undergrads who take up to 18 credits each semester. Room and board fees will add another $8,480 to the student’s annual costs. Part-time undergrads pay $640 per credit hour. As graduate student housing is not available, those students just pay for their tuition and fees as well as their books. All graduate students pay $525 per credit hour. Those in the nursing program will pay another $250 in fees each semester. KCU estimates that most students will also pay around $400 each semester for their books.

KCU offers scholarships and other types of aid to students who complete the FAFSA each year. Some of the awards and grants only go to Kentucky residents, including a $5,000 general award and an opportunity award of between $2,000 and $5,000. Nonresidents can qualify for similar awards of around the same amount. Students who compete in the National Bible Bowl and compete on one of the top teams can also qualify for scholarships of more than $20,000 a year. Through the FAFSA, students can also get grants, loans and other types of aid from the federal and/or state governments. Filing the FAFSA is just one of the steps that students need to take to get financial aid for the degree programs offered at Kentucky Christian University.
