Alliant International University

Alliant International University is unlike a traditional university because it operates as a benefit corporation, which helps students at all levels take advantage of affordable courses. The United States International University and California School of Professional Psychology both operated independently in the San Diego area for a number of years before deciding to merge in 2001 and share resources. Arist Education Corporation later acquired those two campuses, which now operate under the name Alliant International University. Despite being a newer college, Alliant has both regional accreditation as well as program accreditation for many of its more popular programs.

The university now consists of five separate colleges: California School of Professional Psychology, Alliant School of Management, Hufstedler School of Education, San Francisco Law School and California School of Forensic Studies. Its main campus is still in San Diego, but the university now has campuses in several other California cities: Fresno, Los Angeles, Irvine and San Francisco. Students can also spend a semester abroad or a longer period of time studying in Tokyo or Mexico City. Enrollment at the university now includes more than 400 undergrad students and more than 3,400 graduate students. The majority of those graduate students enroll in its psychology and management programs.

Alliant International University Accreditation Details

Whether you narrowed down your search to just a few campuses, or you still aren’t sure where you want to go, make sure that all the campuses on your list have some form of accreditation. Regional accreditation is usually better than national accreditation because this is the type of accreditation needed to get financial aid from the government. Alliant International University has regional accreditation from the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC), which requires that the university renew its accreditation regularly. This California university also has something called program accreditation, which means that professional organizations accredited certain programs. You’ll find that some of the organizations that accredited Alliant include:

  • Commission on Accreditation of Marriage and Family Therapy Education
  • American Psychological Association
  • California Commission on Teacher Credentialing

Alliant International University Application Requirements

Alliant International University is one of just a handful of schools in the United States that does not require a standardized test score as part of its application process. The university understands that some students may have a hard time taking those tests, which is why it puts more importance on your grades in high school.

When you apply for admissions, you must complete the online application. This application asks you just a few simple questions, which it uses to create your unique account. You can then log in and out whenever you want to either finish the application in one sitting or to take your time working on each section. Once you have an account, you’ll need to supply the university with information about your background, including your name, date of birth, social security number, high school attended and outside interests. There is also a $65 nonrefundable application fee that you must pay when you submit that application.

The university requires that all incoming freshmen have a cumulative grade point average of 2.0 or higher on a standard 4.0 scale. If you do not meet this requirement, the university may admit you on the agreement that you take lower level or introductory classes to prove that you can handle college level work. You must submit a transcript that shows your GPA. If you earned 24 or more college credits before enrolling, the university will also ask for an official transcript from the college that you attended.

Tuition and Financial Aid

Alliant is unique because it charges just one rate for all students taking classes on its main campus. When you enroll, you can take any number of courses for just $700 per credit hour. The university does not charge more for nonresidents, though you will pay some fees for using services on its campus. Graduate classes cost more too, even if you enroll in those classes as an undergrad.

If you need help paying for college, make sure that you file the FAFSA and use the right school code for Alliant as soon as possible. Most students file this online form in February or March to start classes in the fall. The university will send you an aid award or letter that shows you how many grants and loans you’ll get for the coming year and the amount of each one. You should also file a scholarship application, even if you think that you will not qualify for any scholarships. Some of these scholarships are only open to those enrolling in specific programs or departments, but other scholarships are open to all incoming students, those who need for financial aid help and those who have a higher GPA. The Alliant financial aid department offers PDF forms that you can download for each one.

Alliant Undergrad Programs

Alliant International University offers just five undergrad programs. One of those is an online program that allows students to earn a Bachelor’s in Child Development. This program is unique because it lets students take advanced classes during their senior years that help them transition to one of the graduate programs offered by the university. Designed for those who want to work with children in schools, it includes courses like children’s literature, children’s art, music and movement, childhood development and community activity. During your final year, you can enroll in a fast track program that focuses on marriage and family counseling, school counseling or teaching English as a second language before enrolling in one of its graduate programs.

You also have the option of enrolling in the Alliant Bachelor’s in Criminal Justice degree program, which can prepare you for working as a corrections officer, going to law school or working with victims of violent crimes. This program includes two field placements that let you spend a semester or more actually working in the criminal justice or forensics field. It also includes a capstone that lets you use the experience you gained in the field to create a project or write a paper that you present as your senior thesis. Classes in the criminal justice program include criminal justice integrated systems, criminal justice response teams, public health and wellness, crime prevention and technology and crime. Alliant International University offers one of the nation’s only undergrad criminal justice programs that requires students gain practical experience before graduating.
