A medical assistant certificate program is also available online. Students who have some healthcare experience can enroll in this program to become a medical assistant.

About the University of Providence

The University of Providence is a private university in Great Falls, Montana that used the name the University of Great Falls for many years. Established as the Great Falls Junior College for Women in the 1930s, it was the only institution of higher learning for women in the state. The Ursuline Sisters and the Sisters of Charity Providence worked with the city’s Catholic Bishop to found the new school. This school changed its admissions policy and became co-educational a few years later, which was when a second school called the Great Falls Normal School opened in the city. Those two schools operated separately for several years before merging to form one large college. It served as the College of Great Falls and then the University of Great Falls before becoming the University of Providence or UP in 2017.

UP has a strong reputation for the outreach programs that it operates, which serve to offer opportunities for underserved areas. A local Native American reservation is home to a small branch of the university, and a second branch is on a nearby military base. Students can choose between traditional and online programs in subjects that range from nursing to addictions counseling. UP is one of the only universities in Montana that has an affiliation with the Roman Catholic Church.

University of Providence Accreditation Details

Students planning to apply for financial aid through the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) must make sure that their colleges have regional accreditation. The Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU) awarded this type of accreditation to UP. It is one of the reasons why students can use transfer credits at UP. The UP nursing programs also have accreditation from the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).

University of Providence Application Requirements

UP has an application deadline for incoming freshmen of August fifth and a registration deadline of the 12th of the month. Those students must complete the UP online application and have their high schools send in their official transcripts. If they submit transcripts that do not have a testing date or score, they will also need to supply an official test score. UP will typically notify students of its decision within two weeks of receiving a completed application and all other information. Accepted students will then need to pay a $150 tuition deposit and a $250 housing deposit to live on the UP campus.

Students applying to a UP graduate program must pay a $50 application fee and fill out/submit an online application. Those who graduated from the university can apply for a waiver, which allows them to submit the application without paying a fee. They also need to provide transcripts that show they completed a bachelor’s program. UP recommends that students have a GPA of at least 3.0 or a similar GPA in their major courses. Other requirements include a resume and a personal statement. Students have one page to explain how the program will help them in their future careers.

Tuition and Financial Aid

Tuition for distance education and part-time students at UP is $838 per credit hour at the undergraduate level. Full-time undergrads pay $25,692 as long as they do not take more than 18 credits of classes. If they do, they will pay the $838 rate for all courses above that amount. Students also pay an activity fee of $100 to $200 each semester and a $250 athletic fee in the fall. They pay at least $6,100 a year for room and board too. Graduate students pay between $641 and $875 per credit hour for their classes.

UP has a Loan Repayment Assistance Program that is open to all students. If a student makes less than $43,000 a year after earning a degree, the university will help the student make his or her loan payments. This includes both direct federal loans and alternative and private loans. It created this program to help students and to encourage them to borrow less money and get more financial aid that does not require repayment. To get loans and other types of financial aid, students must use the FAFSA. Some of the options available to them include grants and scholarships. The University of Providence will use the FAFSA and create a financial aid package that significantly reduces the total cost of attendance for each student.
