Traditionally, high college ROIs were associated with private Ivy league universities (think Harvard or Stanford), but recently, a new report has shone light on some affordable public colleges that also pack a large return on investment in the long run.
The publication- A First Try at ROI: Ranking 4,500 Colleges—was released by Georgetown University’s Center on Education and the Workforce. It ranks 4,500 colleges and universities by their return on investment, and in doing so, reveals some interesting insights. One such insight is the number of affordable public schools associated with impressive long-term ROIs (i.e., above $1 million 40 years post-graduation). In this ranking, we highlight 100 of these public institutions and rate them according to their net price, 40-year ROI, and national recognition as a top public school.

What Is College ROI?
You’ve likely encountered the acronym ROI. It stands for return on investment. The concept is fairly simple: ROI is the return (usually profit) you receive as a result of an investment (usually monetary). ROI is frequently used to calculate the risk of business decisions and investments.
Calculating College ROI
When applied to decisions about college attendance, however, the term ROI gets a bit more complex. There are other factors to consider, including financial aid as well as the intrinsic value of the college experience. The latter may be the most confusing aspect of the equation, since it’s impossible to quantify the benefits of moving away from home, becoming more independent, and meeting like-minded peers.
Still, attempting to calculate your potential return on investment is a good exercise before enrolling in a college or university. It can help you make important decisions such as how much you want to spend on tuition, how much you can afford to borrow in the form of student loans, and yes, which school to attend.
As you’re considering ROI as it relates to attending college, though, just keep in mind that it’s one of many factors you’ll want to keep in mind as you select your future alma mater.
