About the University of Memphis

As with many great things, the University of Memphis had its own humble beginning. Founded in 1912 under the auspices of the General Education Bill, the university was originally known as West Tennessee State Normal School. Over the next decade, the Administration’s first library opened and the men’s first dorms were built. In 1957, the now Memphis State College earned full university status and in 1970, underwent a full building construction, including a 12-story library. Finally, in 1990 the University became known as U of M and added on the comprehensive buildings for research and academic development on campus.

Today, the university has come a long way and has grown into a fully-developed community of sorts. The university covers 1,607 acres of land and has 239 buildings across eight sites. There are currently over 2,500 people who work for the U of M in some respect, including 930 faculty members. As for students, the University of Memphis had 21, 521 students enroll in undergraduate, graduate, and Law school combined. The building may have been exponentially smaller in 1912, but has since become a big part of the culture of Memphis and student life.
