Stony Brook University


Stony Brook University has a large campus on the north shore of Long Island in New York state. The campus is comprised of approximately 1,039 acres and includes world-class research and sports facilities. There are several other campuses including a Manhattan Campus, a Southampton campus and a research park. In addition, the university is one of the joint managers of the Brookhaven National Laboratory. Along with Princeton, Stanford and the University of California, they manage this world-class laboratory that promotes research collaboration. The school was founded in 1947 and is one of the State University of New York’s four University centers. It has also been ranked in the top 1 percent of higher education institutions in the world on a prestigious list curated by the Times Higher Education World University Rankings.

Stony Brook University Accreditation Details

Stony Brook University has been awarded accreditation by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education. The university received its first accreditation from this awarding body in 1957.

Stony Brook University Application Requirements

Freshman applicants to undergraduate programs at Stony Brook University are best prepared for university life when they have met the following application requirements:

  • High School Diploma
  • Completion of 4 years of English, 4 years of social studies, 3 years of math, 3 years of science and 2 to 3 years of a foreign language
  • Completion of standardized tests
  • Show signs of valuable skills through non-academic pursuits like volunteering, sports and other extracurricular activities

Students should check with their intended department or major to learn more about other application requirements that are particular to a field of study. Students should be reminded that even if they are not accepted into their major upon admission, they can reapply to join the program after the requirements have been met.

The application requirements for entry into the Graduate School are more clearly defined than they are in undergraduate programs. Stony Brook University requires the completion of an undergraduate degree from an accredited institution. They also require that each applicant submits a GPA of at least 3.0 on the 4.0 scale. Students will be required to provide the official transcripts from their most recent undergraduate degrees alongside their application. Students applying to the Graduate School are also required to submit letters of recommendation. Depending on their field of study, they may also be required to submit GRE test scores.

Tuition and Financial Aid

Tuition at Stony Brook University is estimated to reach $6,470 for undergraduates that are residents in the state of New York. Out of state and international students will pay approximately $21,550 in tuition for each academic year. These costs do not include fees that are set at $2,388. They also do not include room, board, personal expenses or individual course materials such as books.

Students who are participating in a graduate program at Stony Brook University will be assessed a tuition fee of $10,870 per academic year if they are a resident of the state of New York. If the student is an out of state resident or is an international student, the tuition fee is $22,210 per academic year. Tuition is not inclusive of a $1,541 fee or of accommodation, personal expenses or ancillary costs of certain courses.
