On Blackboard, the School of Nursing led by Dr. Lee Anne Xippolitos delivers a 45-credit, CCNE-accredited Psychiatric Mental Health MSN for registered nurses to seek APRN certification after 500-level Web courses like Clinical Pathobiology with at least 700 practicum hours. Chaired by Dr. Frederick Grine, the Anthropology MA builds a 36-credit, two-year thesis sequence where post-grads can research with the Turkana Basin Institute, travel to Ranomafana National Park in Madagascar, and join Natural History Club. About Stony Brook University

Stony Brook University originated on February 14, 1954, when Dean Leonard K. Olson started organizing the State University College of Long Island for a tuition-free Fall cohort at the Planting Fields Estate. In 1961, President John Francis Lee graduated its first bachelor’s class of 30. The next year, SUCOLI was moved to its permanent Stony Brook location. In 1963, the Education of Health Professions report led to the creation of an on-site hospital. By 1975, the State University of New York at Stony Brook grew to encompass both sides of Nicolls Road. In 1976, President John S. Toll recruited Nobel Prize winner CN Yang to develop cutting-edge research departments. In 1998, SBU was named the operator of Brookhaven National Laboratories by the Energy Department. In 2002, SBU invested $22 million in erecting the 12,300-seat Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium for Division I athletics. In 2005, the shorter Stony Brook University name was chosen.

On June 1, 2019, Stony Brook University satisfactorily submitted the Fifth-Year Periodic Review Report to the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE) to continue the Level VI accreditation status through 2023-24 under the fifth president, Dr. Samuel L. Stanley, who earned the Burrough’s Welcome Scholar Award in Molecular Parasitology. Based 154 miles down Interstate 95 in Philadelphia, this splendid six-state Northeast Region accreditor is recognized by the Council on Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) and New York State Education Department (NYSED). Stony Brook University Application Requirements

Admission to Stony Brook University is classified “very selective” by Peterson’s because only 14,899 of the 35,313 Fall 2017 applicants were successful for 42 percent acceptance. Freshman Seawolves must complete the New York State Regents diploma or an out-of-state high school equivalent. Four units each of English and Social Studies are prerequisite. The Class of 2021 had a median GPA range of 3.6-4.0. The middle 50th percentile presented ACT scores of 26-31. Mid-range admitted SAT scores were 600-680 for Reading and 630-740 for Math. Competitive transfers will hold 3.0 GPAs or better with 30+ credits from accredited colleges. Foreign undergrads prove English ability with an 80 minimum TOEFL iBT mark. The Graduate School only considers accredited bachelor’s grads with at least “B” averages. Some programs, such as the Computer Engineering Ph.D., require GPAs above 3.3. Students achieve a mean 307 GRE, 610 GMAT, and 512 MCAT score. Field experience, such as 100 hours for the Doctorate in Physical Therapy, is often mandated.

Stony Brook University enforces a freshman deadline of January 15th. Undergrad transfers should apply by March 1st for Fall or November 1st for Spring enrollment. The Graduate School has general deadlines of January 15th and October 1st. However, the Electrical Engineering Ph.D. closes on December 15th. Dental Medicine DDS cohorts must file by December 1st. The Public Health MS considers candidates until June 1st. The College of Business set MBA deadlines of June 15th for U.S. and March 15th for international students. Tuition and Financial Aid

For 2019-20, Stony Brook University is charging full-time New York undergrads $7,070 annually. Non-resident bachelor’s tuition is $25,522 each year. Mandatory student fees total $2,842 yearly. Living at the North Shore campus’ dorms like Mendelsohn Quad adds $9,000 for standard rooms. Unlimited meal plans for West Side Dining are $5,196 extra.
