About Excelsior College

Excelsior College is one of the largest colleges in central and eastern New York. Established in 1974, it operated as the Regents External Degree Program for many years. Designed for adults and other nontraditional students, the college operated as part of the University of the State of New York System. Not only did it allow students to gain credit for their military and professional experiences, but it also gave them an easier way to take classes. The college offered both evening and weekend classes as well as distance learning programs. After splitting off on its own in the late 1990s, it adopted the name Excelsior College.

Incoming students who already earned college credits can submit their transcripts. As long as the college can find an equivalent course in its catalog, the student will get credit. It also accepts credits earned through high school programs and credits obtained through distance education programs. The college offers a number of distance learning programs itself, which are popular among military students. They can take and finish their programs while stationed anywhere in the world. Excelsior College has a large urban campus in Albany and an enrollment of more than 36,000 students, which includes nontraditional and distance education students.

Excelsior College Accreditation Details

The New York State Board of Regents gave approval to the college for its degree programs. Excelsior also has regional accreditation from the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE). Its business, electrical and nuclear engineering, and nursing programs all have their own accreditation also.

Excelsior College Application Requirements

Any student who wants to apply to Excelsior College must create an account with the My Excelsior site. This is what they will use when they fill out their applications and when they log in later to check on the status of their applications. Undergrads will pay a $50 application fee and submit their applications. They will also need to list the names and addresses of each school they attended and the dates they went to that school. The college also requires that students list any exams they took or certificates they have. This is especially important in the health sciences programs because the college will award students credit for the certificates they have.

The college’s graduate programs ask for official transcripts too. It wants to verify that students completed a bachelor’s degree and that they obtained that degree from a college with regional accreditation. Nursing students applying to the MSN program must also submit a copy of a valid nursing license that shows the individual has a license to practice in the United States. Those students will also fill out and submit a nursing capstone form.

Tuition and Financial Aid

Any undergrad who takes more than 12 credits from Excelsior College will pay just a student services fee. Those who take fewer credits must also pay a fee of $1,295 that covers the evaluation of their credits and transcripts. All undergrads also pay a tuition rate of $510 per credit hour. Graduate students pay a lower student services fee of $265 per year. They also pay tuition of $645 per credit hour. Excelsior offers discounts for both veterans and military students.

The scholarships available from the college include those based on need or merit and those for nursing students. It also offers scholarships for military students, veterans and their dependents and students who work for any of its partner organizations. The college requires that students submit the FAFSA, which it uses to determine whether they qualify for any of its need-based scholarships. There are also some scholarships that go to worthy students who have good high school grades and also need more help than others do. The FAFSA will also help the college create financial aid packages for students that include both federal and state support. Some of the degree programs available at Excelsior College, such as its nursing and criminal justice programs, have their own scholarships too.
