Located in San Antonio, Texas, St. Mary’s University offers more than 70 different graduate and undergraduate programs, including online programs. There are four academic schools at St. Mary’s University including the School of Law, the School of Science, Engineering, and Technology, the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences, and the Greehey School of Business. The school offers a variety of academic certificates in addition to Bachelor of Arts degrees, Bachelor of Science degrees, and a Bachelor of Business Administration degree. Additionally, the school offers Master of Arts degrees, Master of Science degrees, a Master of Business Administration degree, a Juris Doctor degree, and doctorate degrees.
St. Mary’s is well known for its engineering and business programs, and both of these programs are ranked by the U.S. News & and World Report. The online Graduate Computer Information Technology Programs at St. Mary’s University is also ranked at #41 when compared to other online programs in the country. In addition to this, the school is ranked as one of the best law schools in the country.
In addition to the schools’ academic programs, it also offers several centers and institutes including the Center for Catholic Studies, the Harvey Najim Center, and the SABER Research Institute.
About St. Mary’s University
St. Mary’s University is consistently ranked as one of the top colleges in the country. According to a study from the Brookings Institution, the school received a score of 99 out of 100, and it ranked 17th in a list of the schools with the highest value-added score in regards to a mid-career salary. In addition to this, Money magazine ranked St. Mary’s University as the fourth-best university in the state of Texas and placed it at 52 in a list of the Best Value Colleges in 2016. Currently, the school is ranked as the second in the country for being a great value for the money.
The history of St. Mary’s University is an interesting one. In 1852, the Brothers of the Society of Mary, called Marianists, opened St. Mary’s Institute in San Antonio. Over the years, this institute would become what St. Mary’s University is today. This is the oldest Catholic university in the state of Texas.
When the institute opened, there were five instructors and 12 students. In 1921, the location of classes moves to the St. Louis College campus, and in 1923, the school changed its name to St. Mary’s College. By 1927, the school changed its name a final time to St. Mary’s University, and it began awarding bachelor’s degrees.
Things remained much the same for several decades, but in 1963, the school decided to open its doors to women, and it became a coeducational university. Today, St. Mary’s University is home to almost 4,000 undergraduate and graduate students, and it offers 75 degree programs, including 19 master’s programs and two Ph.D. programs.
St. Mary’s University Accreditation Details
St. Mary’s University holds accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges.
In addition to this, the university holds specialized accreditation for specific programs including the Bill Greehey School of Business, which is accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business and the St. Mary’s School of Law is accredited by the American Bar Association.
Specific degree programs also hold specialized accreditation including the MA in Clinical Mental Health Counseling program, which is accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs and the BS programs in Computer, Electrical, and Industrial Engineering, which are all accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET.
St. Mary’s University Application Requirements
First-year students interested in applying to St. Mary’s University must first fill out an application online. Once the application is submitted, interested applicants must send in their official high school transcript and any SAT and ACT scores. Applicants are also required to submit an essay, which should explain why they believe St. Mary’s is the right school for them, and they must submit a letter of recommendation from a high school guidance counselor. As of 2019, the application deadline is December 15th.
The application requirements for graduate programs at St. Mary’s is a bit different. First, interested students must submit a graduate application, which is available on the University’s website. Applicants must also submit official transcripts from any undergraduate or graduate schools they have previously attended. Graduate applicants must also submit two to three professional recommendations, depending on the program. These must be from employers or professors who are familiar with the applicant’s work. Graduate applicants must also submit a Statement of Purpose to explain why they are pursuing a graduate degree, and must also submit any test scores, including GMAT, GRE, or MAT scores.
The application process for on-campus and online programs is the same.
Tuition and Financial Aid
For the 2019-2020 school year, undergraduate tuition at St. Mary’s University is $15,585 per semester, or $31,170 per year. Graduate and Ph.D. program tuition is charged by credit hour, and it is currently $980 per credit hour.
In addition to tuition, students at St. Mary’s University are required to pay a variety of fees. These include an Academic Assessment Fee, which is $35 per semester and $650 a semester for the Bookstore Account Charge. There are also varying course fees, which students might also be responsible for.
Students who choose to live on campus in the dorms pay anywhere from $2865 to $4095 per semester for housing and $1930 to $2195 for meals.
Financial aid is available for students who qualify. To apply for financial aid at St. Mary’s University, students, both undergraduate and graduate, must fill out and submit the FAFSA, which determines the expected family contribution. This is subtracted from the cost of admission, and a financial aid package is presented.
