About North Greenville University
A committee was appointed in 1891 at a meeting of the North Greenville Baptist Association to determine the location of a new high school in Greenville County, South Carolina. The school was the vision of John Ballenger who felt the children who lived in the mountain area deserved better options in education. Ten acres of land between Glassy and Paris Mountain were donated by Benjamin Neves and the North Greenville High School opened in 1893 although it was not chartered by the state until 1904.
In 1905, the Home Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention assumed control of the school and it became part of the Mountain Mission School System. In 1929, the North Greenville Baptist Association took back control of what was then known as North Greenville Baptist Academy. A junior college was added in 1934 and the school became part of the General Board of the South Carolina Baptist Convention in 1949. High school classes were discontinued in 1957 and the school became a two-year liberal arts college.
