If you are a big city person who loves the bright lights and the hum of activity, Albany could be your city and the University at Albany SUNY could be your school. There are art museums, theater and fine dining everywhere. If you are enrolling in the diverse courses and programs offered at The University at Albany SUNY, you will have more than 50 undergraduate majors to choose from, with an additional 120 master’s programs. The motto of the university is “world within reach,” and there are students from around the globe enrolled. U.S. News and World reports ranks the school as # 126 among National Universities but its Criminology program comes in at #2 and the Information and Technology Management degree ranks as #3. The school has an impressive 56 percent four-year graduation rate. Founded in 1844 as the New York Normal School, the University at Albany has more than 17,000 students and still manages to keep its student-to–faculty ratio at 19:1. That means there is plenty of opportunity for interaction with your teachers. If you want a more global experience, you can elect to study abroad in one of the school’s 500 programs. The University of Albany is also home to the New York Writer’s Institute. On weekends, you could also catch a sports event, if you aren’t playing in it; the school goes big for athletics.

The University at Albany SUNY Accreditation Details

The university is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education. Many of the programs and degrees have individual accreditation as well. Some of the psychology programs are accredited by the American Psychological Association. The American Academy of Forensic Science accredits the Bachelor of Forensic Science, Forensic Chemistry Emphasis. The Public Health degree is accredited by the Council on Education for Public Health and The Social Work Department is accredited by the Council on Social Work Education Office Of Social Work Accreditation. The Network for Schools of Public Policy, Affairs and Administration accredits the Public Health degree. The Master of Urban and Regional Planning degree is accredited by the Planning Accreditation Board. The business school is accredited by the AACSB and the Graduate Teaching Education Department is accredited by the Teacher Education Accreditation Board.

The University at Albany SUNY Application Requirements

If you are registering as a freshman at the school you should be aware of all deadlines. The Early Action deadline is November 15 and regular applications are due by August 1. The first step in applying is to complete the application form. The school encourages students to complete the form online but if you want to mail it, you can print it from the website and mail it to the address found there. A $50 fee must accompany the application. You should request that your high school send your official transcript to the university; they can submit the grades through the SOAR, or Online Academic Records tool, as well. Your SAT or ACT scores should also be sent directly to the school. You will be asked to submit a 260 to 300 words essay on a topic of your choice. In addition, you will need one letter of recommendation from a teacher or counselor. Transfer students generally are required to have maintained a minimum 2.0 GPA at their former college, but some of the programs at the University at Albany require higher GPAs. Students should check with the major or department for details.

If you are a graduate student applying to a program, you will have to meet the requisites of that department. You may apply as a non-degree student and take up to 12 credit hours, or you may apply to a certification program. It is vital to make sure of the deadlines you must meet. To be admitted as a graduate student you must submit a statement of goals and detail your educational background. You will also be asked to complete a departmental questionnaire. You will need three letters of reference and a resume of your work experience. All of this is entered onto your graduate student online account including payment of your admission fee.

Tuition and Financial Aid

The tuition at the University at Albany SUNY for resident undergraduate students is $6,470 per year. Non-resident tuition is $19,590. With fees and housing, resident cost per year is $19,590 and out-of-state students pay $23,857. International student tuition is $816 per credit hour or $36,079 with housing, meal plan and fees. Graduate student tuition is $925 per credit hour.

If you will need assistance paying for your education, the first step is to fill out a FAFSA form. When you receive the results of the free federal service, you will see your federal financial Award along with your family’s expected contribution. That amount, subtracted from the cost of your education is your financial need. That need can be met through a combination of resources. If you are a New York resident, you can apply for the TAP, which is the New York Financial Assistance Program. There are also several grants and scholarships available to New York residents. There are scholarships awarded only to students of the university as well. You may also research private and corporate scholarships, fellowships grants and student loans online. Student Experience

You will find it easy to stay active at the school with its more than 200 clubs and organizations. There are several housing options, some with fitness centers. One innovative program at the university is the Business School Boot Camp. This is a year-long, intensive program that features career-focused courses, allows students to build resumes and practice responses to simulated interviews.
