Purdue University is a land grant public institution that was founded in 1869. It is located in urban West Lafayette, Indiana on a campus of almost 2,500 acres. The annual undergraduate enrollment is approximately 29,200 students. The Purdue University system includes four other campuses that are located throughout the state of Indiana. Approximately 20 percent of students participate in Greek life and the rest enjoy the wide range of campus activities and extracurricular organizations. This includes performance groups, such as the All American Marching Band, and Purdue’s basketball teams that compete in the Division I Big Ten Conference. Purdue University Application Requirements
Incoming freshman must submit an application through the online Common App platform. While filing out the Common App form, students must submit official transcripts, a 250 to 650 word essay and ACT or SAT scores. Although it is not required, a letter of recommendation is highly strongly recommended for students who are applying for scholarships, the Honors Program or highly competitive programs. The application processing takes up to three weeks after the academic materials are received by the Office of Admissions. Transfer students must provide official transcripts, official high school transcripts and ACT or SAT test scores.
Engineering students are recommended to take as many college preparatory math, lab and English courses as possible. These courses should emphasize knowledge and logical reasoning over manual skills. The College of Engineering places accepted students into the First-Year Engineering Program that requires them to complete two semesters of foundational coursework. After completing the program, engineering students select one of the professional schools of engineering that meets their academic needs. Acceptance into these professional schools is based on the student’s Engineering Admission Index (EAI) criteria.
Tuition and Financial Aid
Every academic year, Indiana residents should expect to pay $10,000 for both tuition and room and board. Non-resident students will pay approximately $29,000 for tuition. Books and supplies will be around $1,220, transportation $210 and miscellaneous $1,570 for all students. The engineering program comes with additional fees of $2,000. Purdue University accepts students from all states and global students from around the world. Residency Classification Guidelines have been developed to ensure that applicants who are Indiana residents receive in-state tuition rates. Purdue University offers many ways for students to fund their education, which includes scholarships, student loans, financial aid, internships, paid co-ops and research opportunities. A select amount of merit-based scholarships require students to complete the FASFA. Purdue University’s College of Engineering offers 18 programs for undergraduate students. These majors include chemical, electrical, nuclear, biomedical, computer, agricultural, construction, industrial and environmental engineering. Students are encouraged to focus on key environmental areas. Some students concentrate on watershed stewardship and learn how to ensure that ecological and engineered systems sustainably interact. Students who learn about pollution control and remediation study things like industrial waste control and soil and air treatment. Students who specialize in industrial ecology learn how to analyze the life-cycles of materials and redesign industrial systems and maximize energy efficiency and industrial resource use. Some students prefer to master the principles of sustainability and learn how to analyze and understand the complex interactions of social, technological and environmental systems. All engineering students will take classes that cover the following topics: water treatment, risk assessments, ecosystem restorations, air quality control, ground water protection, environmental toxicology, public health engineering and environmental policy management. Environmental engineering students sustainability also learn about resource recovery, industrial ecology, pollution control, regulatory compliance, life cycle assessment, wastewater management and environmental impact assessment. There are also required math classes, such as geometry and calculus, and technology classes, such as statistics, mechanics and hydraulics.
