The CUNY school system has 20+ campuses, which includes a mix of community colleges, senior colleges, post-graduate schools and an honors college. City College is one of the senior colleges within this system.

City College is located in Hamilton Heights and its Collegiate Gothic-style campus runs from 130th to 141st Streets and stretches across Convent Avenue. The legislature of New York created CUNY in 1961 in order to make university education affordable to students who couldn’t afford the cost of private colleges and universities. The different schools within the CUNY system boast at least 2,000 faculty members. In terms of size, it is the third largest college system in the US after the State University of New York (SUNY) and the California State University system.

CUNY City College Requirements

The undergraduate application pages on the CUNY City College website give step-by-step instructions to applicants, which simplifies the process for students. It’s also possible to apply to several CUNY campuses with a single application.

The website asks aspiring CUNY students to either create an online account if they haven’t yet or to log back into the account they created in order to apply. The school provides applicants with a series of tutorial videos to explain the process.

After students turn in the application, the school asks them to submit other supporting documents, like transcripts. These are submitted separately from the application: Students mark their supporting documents with an eight-digit ID number that the school provides for them.

The supporting documents that the school asks for run along pretty standard lines. Applicants must submit any transcripts from their high school or previous colleges in the case of transfer students, their standardized test scores, personal essays, portfolios (where applicable), letters of recommendation and other materials.

Applicants are asked to pay a $65 application fee to apply to CUNY.

The graduate application page provides future grad students with a portal of sorts for applying to different colleges under the CUNY umbrella, including the Marxe School of Public and International Affairs, the Weissman School of Arts and Sciences and the Zicklin School of Business.

Applicants can also apply to Brooklyn College, CCNY in Manhattan, College of Staten Island, the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism, the CUNY School of Labor and Urban Studies, the School of Law, the School of Professional Studies and to Hunter College to name but a few. In total, the schools within the CUNY system offer more than 800 graduate programs and 200 certificate programs at the graduate level.

Because of the number of different types of degrees and schools that CUNY has, it isn’t possible to cover all of the graduate school application requirements here. However, many of the schools have some standard items they do expect to see from grad school applicants.

These include:

  • A resume or CV
  • An essay
  • The application
  • Transcripts
  • Test scores
  • The TOEFL or the IELTS for international students
  • Internship or professional experience

It’s best for graduate school students to connect with the specific department or school they want to apply to when they need more specific information about their department’s application requirements.

Tuition and Financial Aid

Like the application page, the CUNY City College financial aid website page provides students with a checklist of tasks that they need to complete to file for their financial aid. Students will fill out both the FAFSA form, as well as TAP (the Tuition Assistance Program) to qualify for federal and state financial aid.

By filling out these documents, students can qualify for federal and state grants, student loans, scholarships and other types of aid. CUNY has numerous scholarships, like the Guttman Transfer Scholarship, as well as New York State and New York City scholarships, institutional grants and scholarships and more. CUNY City College also provides opportunity programs and works with veterans who want to take advantage of their education benefits.

Graduate students qualify for a number of different forms of financial aid, including grants and scholarships. They can also receive work study, as well as assistantships, internships and fellowships. Loans are also a possibility. Like undergraduate students, they must fill out the FAFSA and TAP.

Tuition and fees at CUNY are determined by the student’s residency status. Undergraduates who are New York residents pay just under $7,000 a year for tuition, while out-of-state students pay just under $19,000 for tuition.

Master and doctoral students who are New York residents pay around $6,000 for tuition, while out-of-state graduate students pay by the credit: $855 per credit. The prices for graduate school varies slightly, depending on which graduate program the student is in.
