Located on the shores of Lake Ontario in Oswego, New York, SUNY Oswego offers more than 100 different degree options for undergrads, graduates, and online students. There is also a satellite campus located in Syracuse, New York.
There are four different schools that comprise SUNY Oswego: The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, School of Business, School of Communication, Media and the Arts, and the School of Education. There is also a Graduate School, which is home to over 30 on-campus and online graduate programs including an M.A. in Art, M.S. in Chemistry, MBA, MSEd, and more.
In addition to traditional on-campus courses, SUNY Oswego offers several online options both at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Some of these include:

SUNY Oswego is ranked as eighth in the country by U.S. News & World Report and is ranked as 11th in the publication’s Top Public Schools list.
The university is known for being selective, and it only accepts approximately 54 percent of applicants.
About SUNY Oswego
Edward Austin Sheldon founded the Oswego Primary Teachers’ Training School in 1861 in Oswego, New York, which would eventually become SUNY Oswego. The school moved from the city to the lakeshore in 1913 and was renamed Oswego Normal School, a name that would stick until 1942. At that point, the school began offering teaching degrees, and it became the Oswego State Teachers College.
When the State University of New York began forming its system in 1948, the Oswego Teachers College was one of the charter members. Over the next few years, it expanded its course offerings, and by 1962, it was a full arts and sciences college offering both liberal and professional studies.
During the 1960s and 1970s, the school’s enrollment quadrupled, and almost 30 new buildings were erected during that time. In the 1990s, SUNY Oswego divided itself into several schools, including the School of Business and School of Education, which formed in 1992. In 2007, the School of Communication, Media and the arts was created, and in 2008, the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences was created.
Today, SUNY Oswego is made up of almost 60 different buildings and it is home to more than 8,000 students. With more than 110 undergraduate major options and more than 35 graduate programs, there is something for everyone, including those who are looking for online course options.
SUNY Oswego Accreditation Details
The Middle States Commission on Higher Education has accredited SUNY Oswego for many years, and all programs at the university have been registered and approved by the New York State Education Department. In addition to having a full institution accreditation, the university also holds several other accreditations including the following:
- The School of Business holds accreditation from the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business
- The chemistry and biochemistry programs are accredited by the American Chemical Society
- The Mental Health Counseling program holds accreditation from the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs
- The Technology Department is accredited by the Council on Technology and Engineering Teacher Education
SUNY Oswego Application Requirements
There are certain requirements for those who wish to apply as a first-year student at SUNY Oswego. Some of the admission requirements include:
- A completed application (Both the Common Application and the SUNY Application are acceptable)
- Official transcripts from high school
- Letter of Recommendation
- SAT and/or ACT scores
- $50 application fee
Students who are homeschooled must supply SAT and/or ACT scores and show documents that they have completed home school curriculum. In some cases, a GED is required.
Those who wish to apply to SUNY Oswego as a graduate student must also fill out an application for admission. In addition to that, they must submit an essay or statement of purpose, resume, official college transcripts and two or three letters of recommendation. Some graduate programs require GRE or GMAT scores, and some of the art programs require the submission of a portfolio of the applicant’s artwork.
Tuition and Financial Aid
The cost of attending SUNY Oswego depends on several factors. In-state undergraduate students paid $3,435 per semester in the 2017-2018 school year. Undergraduates who live out of state paid $ 8,325 per year. In addition to these costs, students must pay $785 in undergraduate fees and $7,214 in room and board. This adds up to $22,868 per year for New York residents and $32,648 for students who hold residency elsewhere.
Students who choose one of the online programs at SUNY Oswego paid $4,120 per semester in the 2017-2018 academic year, plus the $785 undergraduate fee. This adds up to $9,810 per years for tuition.
The graduate tuition structure is a bit different, and it is determined by the credit hour. New York residents pay $462 per credit hour and out of state students pay $944 per credit hour. The cost for online graduate classes was $555 per credit hour. Those pursuing an MBA pay a different rate. New York residents pay $619 per credit hour, out of state residents pay $1,016 per credit hour, and online students pay $743 per credit hour. There are also other fees required for graduate students, which add up to approximately $1,300.
Financial aid is available to all students who qualify based on the information submitted on the FAFSA form. Approximately 89 percent of SUNY Oswego students receive financial aid, which comes in the form of scholarships, grants, loans, and student employment.
