Most students at RU-N are enrolled in traditional undergraduate programs, and a growing number of students are taking advantage of the online learning resources available at RU-N. Convenient online programs are available for both undergraduate and graduate students. Hybrid programs give students the convenience of mixing online and traditional classes. While online programs require the same number of credit hours for completion as residential programs, many students find that they can complete their studies sooner online than in person. Online learning also gives adult students the flexibility they need to keep up with their professional and family lives while in school. The online programs at RU-N offer students the same rigorous quality and academic challenge as traditional residential programs. Many master’s and doctoral programs can be completed entirely online at RU-N.

Undergraduate students can select from two choices of bachelor’s degrees, and a large number of degree minors and elective courses are available online. RU-N offers many graduate degree programs at its renowned online graduate school. With eight master’s programs and multiple degree focuses for each program, RU-N offers graduate students the high-quality educational experience they’re looking for. Online bachelor’s programs typically take four years to complete while online master’s programs take one to three years to complete. Students enrolled in online degree programs have access to all of the resources available online as well as on campus. From computers, scanners and printers in the library to recreational equipment in the Student Center, the tools and technology needed for learning are always accessible.

The bachelor’s degrees offered online at RU-N include the Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration (BABA) and the Registered Nurse to Bachelor of Science in Nursing bridge program. The master’s degrees offered online at RU-N include the Master of Business Administration, Master of Social Work, Master of Information, Master of Public Administration, Master of Music in Music Education, Master of Arts in Liberal Studies, Master of Education in Adult and Continuing Education and Master of Education in Learning, Cognition and Development. Like their on-campus counterparts, online programs feature small class sizes and personalized attention from professors.

Residential students can enroll in any of the traditional programs available in the hundreds of degree majors offered at RU-N. From chemistry and petroleum engineering to creative writing and mathematics, residential students have a wide range of academic disciplines to choose from. For each discipline at RU-N, students can choose to enroll in a bachelor’s, master’s, doctoral or continuing education program. Several combined bachelor’s and master’s programs are available on campus, including programs in biology, criminal justice, education and history.

Ph.D. students enrolled in the graduate school of RU-N have the chance to perform research at one of the top institutions in the country. All doctoral students are supervised by experienced members of faculty, and all Ph.D. student research culminates in a thesis project that must be defended before a committee of faculty members and administrators. Doctoral students who enroll in a Ph.D. program directly after obtaining a bachelor’s degree must complete a master’s capstone project after two years of classroom study. Students have a high level of autonomy when choosing a capstone project, but the project’s thesis must reflect the knowledge acquired by the student during the coursework.

In 2016, Rutgers University celebrated its 250th anniversary. New Jersey’s state university system was founded in 1766 as Queen’s College, making it the eighth-oldest university in the United States. Over the centuries, Rutgers has expanded its offerings with many academic departments and degree options, and in 1908, Rutgers University-Newark was established. RU-N began as an alliance between five existing universities in Newark. Those universities were the New Jersey Law School, Dana College, the Newark Institute of Art and Sciences, the Seth Boyden School of Business and the Mercer Beasley School of Law. Rutgers University-Newark is institutionally accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE). All of the undergraduate and graduate degree programs at RU-N are fully accredited by the MSCHE, including the online and residential degree programs. The MSCHE performs a thorough audit of all of the student resources, learning tools, campus facilities, and faculty amenities every 10 years to ensure that every student receives a consistent standard of education. The MSCHE is the major regional accrediting institution of the northeastern United States. All institutionally accredited universities in the Northeast are accredited by the MSCHE. It is the accrediting body approved by the federal government to audit degree-granting institutions throughout the region.

Rutgers University-Newark Application Requirements

Rutgers University-Newark is a selective public research institution, and applications are reviewed to ensure that all students have the experience and preparation to succeed. Applications must be submitted before June 21 for the fall semester and before October 1 for the spring semester. Freshmen applicants must provide a high school transcript or proof of GED. Transfer students and graduate students must provide an official college transcript, and graduate students must provide proof of a bachelor’s degree from an accredited university. All applications must include GPA information, SAT, ACT or GRE test scores as well as a writing sample.

Tuition and Financial Aid
