About Howard University
Howard University originated on March 2, 1867, when the U.S. Congress federally chartered a graduate theological school for African-American preachers. In 1869, Howard opened the nation’s first Black law school. By 1872, it focused on liberal arts education for 150,000 newly freed slaves. In 1907, Howard taught the first Black Rhodes Scholar, Alain LeRoy Locke. In 1926, Howard University inaugurated its first African-American president named Mordecai Wyatt Johnson. On November 19, 2015, the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE) accepted a Periodic Review Report from Howard University to continue the Level VI accreditation satisfactorily through 2020 under its 17th president, Dr. Wayne A.I. Howard University Application Requirements
Heading to Howard University is considered “moderately difficult” by Peterson’s because 7,436 of the 15,163 Fall 2017 applicants were triumphant for only 49 percent selection. Promising first-year Bison of socially and economically disadvantaged backgrounds need a secondary or GED diploma. Well-balanced, college-prep curricula with a minimum 2.5 GPA is preferred. On average, freshmen present a 3.33 GPA, 1180 SAT, and 24 ACT mark. The Honors Program requires at least 28 ACT and 1300 SAT scores. Talented transfers need 15+ credits, including college-level English and Math, graded “C” or greater. The School of Business mandates a 3.0 for B.B.A. majors. The Graduate School seeks a four-year bachelor’s or higher with a minimum 2.75 GPA, but program details can differ. Nursing (M.S.N.) majors need RN licensure plus a Statistics prerequisite and one year of experience. Anatomy (M.D.) students need a 494 MCAT score or better. The School of Law admits a median 152 LSAT and 3.2 GPA.
Howard University set freshman deadlines of November 1st for Early Action and February 15th for Regular Decision. Undergrad transfers must apply by April 30th for Fall or September 30th for Spring. The Graduate School has an early application period of October 1st to December 15th, but program deadlines vary. For instance, the Civil & Environmental Engineering (M.Eng.) considers applicants until December 1st. Counseling Psychology (Ph.D.) cohorts must file by January 1st.
