Raleigh has earned the reputation of being the third most educated city in the United States, according to Time magazine. Recognition is based on the percentage of area residents who hold college degrees. Presence of the Research Triangle Park, one of the largest high-tech research parks in the world, and top-ranked universities adds to the city’s reputation. Raleigh and connecting cities of Durham and Chapel Hill are home to Duke University, North Carolina State University, and the University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill.

Methodology

We reviewed 51 accredited colleges and universities in Raleigh and the surrounding area that offered at least one online degree program. We looked at the rankings each school earned from major publications like Forbes magazine, The Princeton Review, and U.S. News and World Report. We selected the top 10 institutions based on their national and regional rankings. Institutions with a national ranking were listed higher on our list than schools with a regional ranking.

#10 – Winston-Salem State University

Two online master’s degrees are available: master’s in nursing degree and master of science in rehabilitation counseling. Winston-Salem State is ranked by major publications like U.S. News and World Report. In fact, the publication ranks the school as the 84th best regional university in the South. Other rankings include #40 among the top public schools and #30 among the best historically black colleges.
