Methodology

The following ranking of early childhood education degrees online was developed using Wikipedia’s list of accredited online colleges, College Navigator<, The Best Schools, Early Childhood Education Degrees (ECED) and research of each individual school’s online programs and offered degrees. After creating a list of all major schools offering an early childhood education degree online, we sorted the list by the average net cost of undergraduate tuition, as reported by College Navigator, and chose the top 30. These schools are ranked according to that net cost, from highest to lowest. The “Unique Courses” sections list a few examples of the many courses offered within each college’s program.

Overview: Columbus State’s early childhood education program emphasizes contemporary theory and research to provide students with a solid knowledge base before entering their teaching career. According to the school’s website, “The program was selected as the 1997 Distinguished Program in Teacher Education by the Georgia Association of Teacher Educators (GATE).” Graduates of this program will have an entry-level Georgia certification, and they will be qualified to teach pre-kindergarten through age five.

Columbus State made it onto TBS’s list of online early childhood education degree schools at No. 11. The school is also accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges to award associate, baccalaureate, masters and educational specialist degrees, as well as a doctoral degree. Specifically, educator preparation at CSU is accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE).

Overview: Western Governor’s early childhood education program enables students to earn a degree as well as a K-8 teaching certificate fully online, with the exception of the in-classroom component filed experiences and demonstration teaching. This program is specifically for those who already have experience in a career field, such as unlicensed substitute teachers, retired military personnel, career changers, etc.; individuals who may not have career experience, but have already completed some college coursework; and individuals who can spend about 15 or more hours on their studies each week. The program covers several areas of study, including general education, teacher education diversity and instructional planning and presentation.

WGU landed in the No. 4 spots for both TBS’s and ECED’s lists of top online schools for an early childhood education degree. The online program is also accredited by the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education and the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities.

Overview: At UNC, Greensboro, the Department of Human Development and Family Studies offers students and online early childhood degree completion program, with which students can choose to concentrate in either the birth through kindergarten online teacher licensure or the early care and education online program. This program is intended for students who have completed an AAS degree at a community college in North Carolina, but those who completed that degree out-of-state should be able to transfer in with all of the requirements. The HDFS online program is part of the 2-Plus program at UNCG, which is designed to help community college graduates transfer with advanced standing to pursue their career goals. An early care and education concentration prepares students for careers serving children with and without disabilities within child care centers, agencies, private kindergarten, hospitals and more. The teacher licensure programs prepare students to join careers in teaching public school pre-kindergarten and kindergarten.

Overview: The University of Washington only offers two fully-online bachelor’s degrees, one of which includes the early childhood and family studies degree program. This program prepares students to make an impact by positively educating young children with the right knowledge and skills. The UW College of Education designed this program to fit the needs of students who are interested in analyzing and applying the latest evidence-based research in early learning. The curriculum combines the study of academic theory with practical training in the field, and the courses are enhanced with the most-recent research from the National Center on Quality Teaching and Learning, as well as the Haring Center. The program also includes service-learning courses, where students are to practice their skills in the real world while working alongside teachers in preschools classrooms and childcare centers.
